Inspiration

We created InSync because we know that the journey to better health is scientifically proven to be better when you have good social support. Youth, especially after COVID-19, have seen an uptick in feelings of anxiety and depression compared to the past. Many of these mental health issues resulted from feelings of isolation and loneliness during lockdown restrictions. A study published by the American Journal of Psychiatry revealed that people with close confidants are more satisfied with their lives and less likely to suffer from depression. Numerous doctors also indicate that social support is essential for maintaining physical and psychological health. This app was cultivated to empower youth to take their first steps in reaching out for health-related concerns by having a centralized app where you can keep yourself accountable for your wellness and be up to date with your friends' journeys as well. With InSync, you're not just improving your health; you're strengthening your friendships and building healthier habits one shared step at a time.

What it does

We have made it easier for those on their wellness journeys to involve their most trusted friends in holding themselves accountable for their goals. With InSync, you can openly share your health-related concerns, and offer encouragement, all within a supportive and understanding community that you have chosen. If you are forgetting to take your prescribed medications, have your friends remind you through InSync to get you back on track! Visualize your days with a built-in mood and symptom tracker that you can choose to share with your friends. Participate in daily shared activities meant to empower one another and make it easier to open up. Tracking your progress along with your friends can help ease the anxiety of health-related concerns and bring you closer to one another.

How we built it

The launch website was built through React JS and HTML/CSS hosted via GitHub. InSync's app prototype was designed through Figma and the icon was drawn by one of our team members through Notability.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge as first-time hackers at a hackathon was streamlining the code when formatting our launch website. While we had experienced Figma users in our team, we still ran into some design hiccups in formulating our vision of an application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment we're most proud of is creating a fleshed-out app prototype that has the potential for development in such a short amount of time. Formulating this idea together was also rewarding in that we all saw ourselves benefiting from an app like this. Being able to create a prototype and a launch website has sharpened our skills in Javascript and Figma, making us feel more confident in how we build our projects in the future.

What we learned

As it was our first hackathon, we learned a lot of new code and new Figma features in a short period of time through several trial-and-error processes. We also learned proper time management skills and how to distribute work to four individuals who have varying levels of skill in coding and design.

What's next for InSync

With a finalized prototype, InSync could definitely be developed into a fully functioning app that can accommodate both iOS and Android devices in the future.
