Inspiration

The insurance industry continues to rely heavily on manual processes for customer onboarding, document verification, risk assessment, and policy approvals. These repetitive tasks increase processing time, introduce human errors, and create inconsistent customer experiences. We wanted to demonstrate how AI-powered agents, orchestrated through UiPath Maestro, can transform these traditional workflows into intelligent, collaborative, and human-centric processes. Our inspiration was to build a solution where AI handles routine decision-making while seamlessly involving human experts whenever judgment or compliance is required, ultimately reducing turnaround time and improving operational efficiency.

What it does

InsureMate AI is an intelligent insurance intake and processing platform that automates the end-to-end insurance request lifecycle. Customers begin by submitting their insurance requirements through an AI-powered Intake Agent, which captures customer information, validates mandatory fields, generates a unique request ID, and stores the request in UiPath Data Service. The solution then validates uploaded documents using AI, automatically identifies missing or invalid documents, and routes complex cases to human reviewers through UiPath Maestro's Human-in-the-Loop capabilities. Once the documents are verified, a Risk Assessment Agent evaluates the customer's profile and generates a risk score, which is used by a Policy Recommendation Agent to recommend the most suitable insurance plan. Finally, the request is approved, rejected, or sent back for additional information, with Maestro orchestrating the complete workflow from start to finish.

How we built it

We built InsureMate AI using UiPath Maestro as the central orchestration platform. The business workflow was modeled using BPMN, enabling Maestro to coordinate multiple AI agents, service tasks, business rules, and Human-in-the-Loop activities throughout the insurance lifecycle. Customer requests and workflow status are stored in UiPath Data Service, which acts as the centralized repository for the application. Independent AI agents perform customer intake, document validation, risk assessment, and policy recommendation, while Maestro manages workflow transitions, exception handling, and human approvals. This architecture demonstrates how agentic AI and workflow orchestration can work together to deliver an intelligent, scalable insurance automation solution.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing an end-to-end solution that fully leveraged UiPath Maestro as the orchestration engine while keeping the implementation simple enough for a proof of concept. Defining clear interactions between AI agents, BPMN workflows, service tasks, Data Service, and Human-in-the-Loop activities required careful planning. Another challenge was designing workflows that could gracefully handle incomplete documents, low AI confidence scores, business exceptions, and manual interventions without disrupting the customer experience. Ensuring the solution remained modular and extensible for future enhancements was also an important design consideration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully demonstrated how UiPath Maestro can orchestrate an AI-driven insurance workflow from customer onboarding through final policy recommendation and approval. We built a modular architecture where specialized AI agents collaborate through Maestro while maintaining human oversight for critical business decisions. We are especially proud of integrating Human-in-the-Loop capabilities into the process, allowing reviewers to intervene only when necessary. The solution showcases the practical application of agentic AI, BPMN orchestration, and intelligent automation in solving real-world insurance challenges.

What we learned

This project provided valuable experience in designing agentic workflows using UiPath Maestro and BPMN. We learned how workflow orchestration simplifies collaboration between AI agents, business processes, and human reviewers while maintaining transparency and governance. The project also reinforced the importance of modular architecture, centralized data management, exception handling, and human oversight when building enterprise-grade AI solutions. Most importantly, we discovered how AI and human expertise complement each other to create more reliable and efficient business processes.

What's next for InsureMate AI

The next phase of InsureMate AI is to evolve it into a production-ready insurance operations platform supporting multiple insurance products, including health, life, motor, and property insurance. We plan to integrate OCR and Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) for automated document extraction, connect with external insurer and healthcare APIs for real-time verification, incorporate AI-powered fraud detection and predictive risk analytics, and provide multilingual conversational support. We also envision expanding Maestro orchestration to cover the complete insurance lifecycle, including claims processing, policy renewals, customer servicing, compliance monitoring, and continuous AI learning to improve recommendations and decision-making over time.
