Inspiration

Inspiration struck when we embarked on the journey of finding our own apartments. Navigating the intricacies of insurance proved to be a formidable challenge. State Farm's initiative led us on a path of exploration, enabling us to delve deep into the diverse realms of insurance. Our motivation was clear—to craft a solution that would empower young adults with the knowledge of insurance, making it accessible and straightforward.

What it does

Introducing our groundbreaking educational web application designed to empower young adults and college students with invaluable insights into State Farm's comprehensive insurance offerings. In today's financially focused world, we decode the complexities of insurance, offering crystal-clear explanations of each insurance type's unique purpose. Our platform takes users on a personalized journey: if they're insurance-savvy, we provide a quiz-driven exploration of all policies; if not, we guide them based on their unique needs, educating them on essential coverage. At the end of both paths, users can delve deeper into insurance types or connect with an agent based on the zip-code the user enters. With a user-friendly interface and expert guidance, our mission is to equip the next generation with the confidence to navigate life's uncertainties.

How we built it

We built our web application using a powerful tech stack that includes Node.js, TypeScript, Chakra UI, and npm. Working seamlessly within the Visual Studio Code (VSCode) environment, we harnessed the flexibility and scalability of Node.js for server-side operations while leveraging TypeScript's strong typing and modern features to ensure code quality and reliability. Chakra UI, known for its elegant and responsive design components, played a pivotal role in creating a visually appealing and user-friendly interface. The npm package manager facilitated efficient dependency management, ensuring smooth integration of third-party libraries and packages. Our development journey was a testament to the synergy of these technologies, enabling us to deliver an educational web application that simplifies insurance education and empowers our users.

Challenges we ran into

Despite our enthusiasm for the project, we encountered several challenges along the way, primarily due to our team's limited prior experience with all of our tools, which were Chakra UI, React, Node.js, and TypeScript. As we began working, we found ourselves immersed in a steep learning curve. We had to quickly pick up new skills and self-learn on the spot, how to effectively use these tools. This learning process presented its own set of hurdles, including attempting to understand the intricacies of Chakra UI's components and the server-side capabilities of Node.js. As a result, however, we walked out of the hackathon with much more knowledge than we'd entered with.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Walking out of this hackathon, our team achieved a significant milestone in terms of our technical skills and knowledge. Prior to the event, we had limited experience with TypeScript, React, Node.js, and Chakra UI. However, through hands-on learning during the hackathon, we gained a strong understanding of these technologies. The tools that we'd worked with enhanced our code quality and allowed us to develop dynamic user interfaces while still maintaining an aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly application. This hackathon equipped us with a valuable skillset that will undoubtedly prove beneficial in the future.

What we learned

In the course of our journey, not only did we master the intricacies of developing a web application with Node.js, React, Chakra UI, and TypeScript, but we also delved into the art of architecting a stellar user experience. We honed our skills in designing an intuitive app flow that ensures seamless navigation, delightful user interactions, and efficient task execution. Our commitment to delivering a top-notch web application extended beyond the technology stack, encompassing a deep understanding of user needs, effective wireframing, user interface design, and responsive web development practices. The end result is a web application that not only boasts robust technology but also a user-centric approach that enhances the overall user experience.

What's next for InsuranceEDU

In the future, we're focused on making InsuranceEDU even better. We'll add information about different types of insurance, create more quizzes to help you learn, and provide useful tools to simplify insurance. We're also thinking about mobile apps for on-the-go access and building a community where you can connect with others who share your interest in insurance. Our goal is to continue making insurance education and management easier for you.
