Inspiration
It all started with a simple, frustrating question: "Where did my time go?" Like most people, I'd find myself with small pockets of free time—on a commute, waiting in line, or just before bed. Too often, I'd fill that time by mindlessly scrolling through social media. I wanted to learn and grow, I had a stack of books I wanted to read and podcasts I wanted to listen to, but I felt like I never had the large blocks of time required.
I realized the problem wasn't a lack of desire to learn, but a lack of a better alternative to the instant gratification of a social feed. I thought, "What if I could build a habit that was as easy and engaging as scrolling, but actually made me smarter and more capable?" That was the spark for Bookism. I wanted to create the app that I personally needed.
What it does
Bookism is a mobile app designed to help you build your wisest self in just a few minutes a day. It takes the key ideas from the world's best nonfiction books, podcasts, and articles and distills them into powerful, bite-sized insights.
But it doesn't stop there. For every insight, the app gives you concrete Actions you can take to apply that knowledge to your life. You can then track your progress and build a Habit Streak, turning learning into a satisfying daily ritual. It's designed to close the gap between knowing something and actually doing something about it.
How we built it
We built Bookism with a focus on a clean, fast, and unified user experience. The app is built using Flutter, which allowed us to create a beautiful and responsive interface for both iOS and Android from a single codebase.
For the backend, we relied on Firebase. Its suite of tools, including Firestore for our database and Firebase Authentication for user management, allowed us to build a secure and scalable foundation quickly. All the summaries and content are written and curated by our small team to ensure quality and clarity.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge wasn't technical; it was psychological. How do you make learning as compelling as a social media feed? Early versions of the app felt like a chore—just another to-do list.
The breakthrough came when we focused on the "Habit Streak" feature. We spent a lot of time designing the user experience around it, adding small animations, satisfying sounds, and visual progress trackers. Making the streak feel like a fun game, rather than a nag, was the key. It was a constant battle against making the app feel like homework, and instead making it feel like a small daily win.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Honestly, we're most proud of the feedback from our early users. When someone tells us they've replaced their morning Twitter scroll with Bookism and are now on a 30-day learning streak, that feels like a massive accomplishment.
We’re also proud of the simplicity of the final product. It’s easy to add more and more features, but we worked hard to keep the app focused on its core loop: Insight -> Action -> Streak. Creating something that is both powerful and simple is something we're incredibly proud of.
What we learned
The biggest lesson we learned is that information is not the same as wisdom. Just giving someone a summary isn't enough. The real value, and the real challenge, is helping them build the habit of applying that information. We learned that the most important feature isn't the summary itself, but the simple, actionable step that comes after it. People don't just want to know more; they want to be more.
What's next for Bookism: Your Daily Wisdom
We are just getting started! Our goal is for Bookism to be the ultimate tool for applied wisdom. Our roadmap for the near future includes:
- Expanding our library to include insights from documentaries, academic papers, and lectures.
- Introducing community features that allow users to discuss ideas and hold each other accountable for actions.
- Personalizing the daily feed even further with an AI-powered recommendation engine based on a user's goals.
We're excited to keep building a product that helps people use their time more meaningfully, one insight at a time.
