Inspiration
Looking through our followings, we realized many people did not follow us back. We wished there was a simpler way to figure out who does not follow us back instead of meticulously looking through every follower. So, we created a solution.
What it does
It takes your login and compares your following to followers. With this information, it gives you a list of users who do not follow you back and a list of users you do not follow back.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the front end to create our pseudo website. For the backend, selenium and python were used to web scrape the information from Instagram.
Challenges we ran into
We were unsure of how to integrate the front and back end. In addition, this was our first time interacting with Selenium, so we had to learn how to utilize its features. We were not able to access the profile information from Instagram as it detected us as a bot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Given it was our first hackathon, we were proud of how much work we were able to complete in the limited amount of time. We were able to create a project that showed off our new skills. In addition, our collaboration was very smooth and we had great communication.
What we learned
Before this, we had no experience with web scraping and selenium, so we had to watch many tutorials and do lots of research to implement it into our project. We also had to learn how to integrate the back-end aspect of the project with the front-end.
What's next for InstaScrape
We hope to find another way to extract the user's followers/following without being detected as a bot.
