Inspiration
I wanted to create a camera app that recreates the fun and anticipation of instant photography in a simple mobile experience.
What it does
Instant Cam lets users take photos, apply filters, and view them with a development animation that gradually reveals the image like a real instant photo.
How we built it
Instant Cam was built with Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform. Most of the UI and app logic are shared across Android and iOS, while CameraX and AVFoundation are used for native camera functionality. RevenueCat powers the premium subscription features.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was creating a consistent camera experience across Android and iOS while working with different native camera APIs. We also faced several issues during the App Store review process before the iOS version was approved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully released Instant Cam on both Google Play and the App Store during Shipaton, using a shared Kotlin Multiplatform codebase.
What we learned
We learned a lot about cross-platform camera development, Compose Multiplatform, RevenueCat integration, and the process of publishing and maintaining apps on both major mobile platforms.
What's next for Instant Cam
Next, we plan to add more filters, improve the camera and development experience, and continue refining the app based on user feedback.
