Inspiration
The increasing global warming and climate change is a serious issue. We got inspiration from Social Media platforms like Instagram and Twitter and research to solve this. There are more than 2.6 trillion tons of trash produced annually in the world and only 13% of it s recycled. We were inspired to create Instagreen as a way to help people realize how much they impact our Earth by including features like the Carbon Calculator, making resolutions, and looking at real-time data.
What it does
It is a web application with a minimalistic design. It asks users to enter their city name, state name, and country name. Based on the input received it shows them the air pollution in their area. It has a feature by which users can make a resolution and complete it at their pace. There is a carbon footprint calculator embedded in it which is the coolest feature we have provided and will be a major step in making people realize do's and donts.
How we built it
We built it using HTML, CSS, and Boostrap. In the backend, we used NodeJS, ExpressJS, jQuery, and Vanilla Javascript. The editor was VScode.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge for all of us was that we are all newbies either in the frontend or backend. The challenge was learning the backend development in one day and implementing everything in the web application the next day. Although the continuously leaving team members made us worried and to change our plans almost every day. When our entire schedule and plans were affected, a lot of time was wasted in finding members for the team. At the time we realized to connect the backend with the frontend part, we were very late and we had to change our web app by eliminating some major features we wished to add.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have deeply researched the facts and concepts before implementing our ideas. We read about the human tendency towards the habit of making resolutions to thoughts on sustainability. We are proud that our web application provides very unique features to users which we as a human would love to use. We came up with effective solutions and our website works well on the server. I have worked on the backend after learning it in a very short time is something I am proud of. The continuous efforts of my team members in designing and getting good content were immense.
What we learned
We learned the importance of time management and decision-making. We learned to have backup plans for every project as in the beginning 3-4 team members left our team during the coding period. Also got to know how important is team, as we got unique ideas from each other. Learned cooperation, teamwork, and a lot from each other.
What's next for Instagreen
We wished to make it like Instagram and Twitter. Where users can post their pictures and tweets in Green Feed so that others can appreciate them. In the next release, this project will allow users to create a profile, get scores after the completion of resolutions, and make streaks when completing resolutions in the sequel. Users will be able to like and comment on the posts and it will be an engaging web application that will contribute faster to saving the earth with help of technology.
