Inspiration
In 2002, my mom was diagnosed with diabetes. I still remember the quiet in our home after the doctor's words. She was the person who fed all of us, the one who turned ordinary ingredients into love on a plate, and suddenly food, the very thing she gave us, had become something she was afraid of.
So I went looking for answers. I searched everywhere I could reach, and everywhere I traveled I asked the same question in different kitchens, markets, and languages: what can she eat that will keep her healthy without taking away the joy of eating? I met home cooks who swore by simple, fresh, balanced meals. I met people managing the same diagnosis who had learned, painfully and slowly, which foods steadied them and which ones hurt. I collected recipes, habits, and small pieces of wisdom from strangers who became teachers.
What I learned changed her life and mine. It was not a miracle pill or an extreme diet. It was healthy, balanced, personalized food, meals built around her body, her preferences, and what she needed to avoid. Over the years that food helped her steady her health and, more than that, gave her back the happiness of eating. Today, as she approaches 70, she is living a healthier, happier life.
But I never forgot how hard that search was. It took years, travel, and grace to find what should have been simple. Millions of people get a diagnosis like my mom's, or live with allergies, or simply want to eat better, and they face the same wall she did: overwhelming, generic, one-size-fits-all food advice that never quite knows who they are. Instafoody is my answer to that. I wanted to put the years I spent searching into an app that hands anyone, instantly, the personalized, healthy food that took my family so long to find.
What it does
Instafoody is a personalized cooking companion that knows who you are and helps you eat well because of it.
It starts by getting to know you the easy way. During a simple onboarding, you tap to select your health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies. There is nothing to type and no forms to fill out, you just choose the options that match you. In seconds, the app understands how you need to eat, including what you must avoid.
From then on, that understanding follows you everywhere. Instafoody recommends recipes that already fit your goals and steer clear of your allergies. Its Smart Talking AI Cooking Assistant, the only one of its kind on Google Play, already knows your health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies, so you can talk to it and it will recommend and guide you, hands-free, through cooking a personalized recipe that is right for you. You can turn the ingredients you already have into a full recipe with nutrition details, reducing waste and answering the daily question of what to cook.
It also connects you to people. You can discover and book chefs, nutritionists, and dietitians, and because the app already carries your dietary preferences and allergies into the booking, the professional does not have to keep asking those questions back and forth. Instafoody makes sure they adhere strictly to your needs when they prepare food or recipes for you, so eating something made by someone else feels safe.
In short, Instafoody does for anyone what took me years and a trip around the world to do for my mom: it finds the healthy, personalized food that fits your life.
How we built it
We built Instafoody as a cross-platform Flutter app backed by an AI-powered service layer, with personalization as the foundation rather than a feature bolted on later.
At the core is a user profile captured through a tap-to-select onboarding for health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies. That profile is stored and then threaded through the whole system, so recipe recommendations, discovery, and the AI assistant all read from the same source of truth about the user. The Smart Talking AI Cooking Assistant combines conversational AI with real-time speech-to-text and natural text-to-speech, grounded in the user's profile so its guidance is personal and safe. We built the recipe marketplace and the chef, nutritionist, and dietitian booking flow to pass the buyer's preferences and allergies through to the professional, and to hold them to those requirements. We paid close attention to making the experience calm and low-friction: selecting instead of typing, clear states for loading and errors, and a design whose whole job is to carry the user's needs for them.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest challenge was getting Instafoody app ready for this hackathon in less than 2 weeks, scaling Google Play's scrutiny, making personalization on the app feel effortless while being trustworthy. Capturing something as serious as an allergy has to be reliable, so we chose tap-to-select options over free text, which reduces errors but meant designing a clean, comprehensive set of choices that still feels quick.
Making the AI assistant genuinely aware of each user, rather than a generic chatbot, took real work: it had to consistently respect a person's health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies in every suggestion, and do it conversationally and hands-free while someone is actually cooking. Extending that same trust to human professionals was its own challenge, making sure a chef, nutritionist, or dietitian receives and honors the buyer's requirements without back-and-forth. And underneath all of it, we had to keep one consistent profile flowing correctly through recommendations, chat, and bookings so the personalization never contradicted itself.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that Instafoody turns a painful, years-long search into something anyone can do in seconds. The onboarding that captures health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies without any typing is a small thing that changes everything downstream.
We are especially proud of the Smart Talking AI Cooking Assistant, which we believe is the only talking AI cooking assistant on Google Play that recommends and guides users to cook personalized recipes based on their health goals, dietary preferences, and allergies. And we are proud that the same care extends to real people, so that booking a chef, nutritionist, or dietitian comes with the safety of knowing they will strictly follow your dietary needs. Most of all, we are proud that the app is built on a real story and a real outcome: healthy, personalized food that helped my mom live better.
What we learned
We learned that personalization is really about respect, remembering who someone is so they never have to keep explaining themselves or worry about being forgotten. We learned that the best way to gather sensitive, important information is to make it effortless and safe, which is why tapping beats typing. We learned that people do not want to be put on a restrictive diet, they want food that fits their life and still brings joy, exactly what helped my mom. And we learned that trust is the real product: whether the guidance comes from an AI or a human professional, users need to know their health goals and allergies will be honored every time.
What's next for Instafoody
Next, we want to make sure that every food creator in the world can monetize instantly on Instafoody, we plan to get on App store in a month, we want to deepen the personalization: smarter recommendations that learn from what you cook and how you feel, richer nutrition guidance, and an even more capable talking assistant. We want to grow the community of chefs, nutritionists, and dietitians so more people can safely get help from real experts, and expand support for more conditions, allergies, and cultural cuisines so the app fits even more lives around the world. The goal that started in 2002 stays the same: to make it effortless for anyone, anywhere, to find the healthy, personalized food that lets them live a longer, happier, healthier life, the way my mom does today as she approaches 70.
