Inspiration

ROOTS was inspired by our own eye-opening experiences with fast fashion in the clothing industry. Learning more about a store we liked and seeing that we were actually supporting harmful methods was disappointing and frustrating that we had not known about it previous to purchasing their products. We wanted to create a centre for information that will allow people to be more aware of what they're buying.

What it does

ROOTS makes researching clothing brands easier, providing quick information so that consumers can be aware of the purchases they make.

How we built it

Using HTML and CSS, we were able to create multiple pages and style them. Using the internet, we learned how to add new elements to our website to make it easier to navigate and use.

Challenges we ran into

Learning new code was extremely difficult because the unfamiliarity and lack of understanding made debugging harder. We found that we had to experiment a lot to figure out what each line did. Even if we found which line was incorrect, it was sometimes troublesome to find what specifically had to be fixed to fit what we had in mind.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Though it was difficult to learn something new, through research and experimentation, we were able to persist and successfully complete parts of the website we previously knew nothing about.

What we learned

We learned more about HTML and CSS and how to create a multiple-page website. We also learned how to create drop-down menus, search bars, and navigation bars. We bettered our understanding of flexbox containers and images with image maps as well.

What's next for ROOTS

We hope to use image recognition to quickly show shoppers information on the clothing they're thinking of buying while they're in the store. We hope to create code that can identify a brand through an uploaded picture of a clothing tag taken by the user that will then direct the user to that brand's page on ROOTS.
