Inspiration While preparing for the CharlestonHacks Innovation Engine Hackathon, we explored challenge statements that genuinely reflect real-world gaps in tech ecosystems. One issue stood out: South Carolina’s innovation activity is growing, but it remains fragmented, uncoordinated, and invisible to many—especially founders, investors, and learners.
But this isn’t just a local problem. Around the world, regional innovation hubs struggle with visibility, duplication, and lost collaboration opportunities. That insight inspired InnoConnect SC, a digital solution to map, connect, and empower innovation ecosystems in real time.
“We wanted to build more than just a website—we aimed to create an engine that accelerates real connection and community among builders.”
🛠️ How We Built It We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build a clean, responsive web platform that includes:
📅 AI-Ready Events Calendar – to coordinate events statewide and reduce overlap
🏢 Dynamic Startup Directory – to explore who’s innovating, and where
📊 Regional Trend Analytics – showing trends and gaps using interactive charts
🗺️ Heatmap Mockup – laying groundwork for future GIS-driven visualizations
🧠 Smart Submission Flow – to collect data from the community and feed future AI features
The frontend is optimized for mobile and simplicity—no login required, no heavy dependencies, privacy first.
💡 What We Learned Simplicity scales. Big ecosystems can be coordinated through simple, powerful interfaces.
Design matters. A thoughtful user experience invites collaboration and engagement.
Data is everything. With structured community input, the platform can grow into a smart, living system.
🚧 Challenges We Faced Scoping a meaningful MVP – With limited time and no backend, we had to choose the most high-impact features for day one.
Designing for scalability – We planned for a future that includes AI agents, real-time data scraping, and geospatial visualizations.
Global applicability – We wanted the project to serve SC today, but be useful for any region tomorrow. That meant building a modular architecture and making everything easily adaptable.
🌎 Why It Matters InnoConnect SC is not just a hackathon project—it’s the seed of a global model for empowering regional ecosystems, especially in underrepresented tech communities. With the right support, it can grow into a platform that connects cities, nations, and people who build the future.
“Innovation starts when people connect. This is the map to make that happen.”
