Inner Strength Initiative Mental Health Education Outreach
Our project aims to help educate about good mental health practices and certain mental health disorders while also providing resources in order to achieve a more educated and supportive community.
As the attention and awareness about Mental Health increases, there are still people who hold common misconceptions about certain conditions or what it means to practice good mental health habits. Our group decided that we wanted to create this project in order to not only educate people directly on these conditions but also provide resources from credible sources where they can do their own research as well.
What it does
Our project is essentially a questionnaire program which asks the user if they want to learn more about specific mental health conditions which will then direct them to either a quiz-style questionnaire section about the certain disorder they want to learn about or will direct them to general information about the disorder where they can learn more on their own time. Once they are completed with that section of questioning/information, they will then be directed to a general mental health questionnaire which essentially quizzes them on their current habits and if those align with good practices that have been proven to improve mental health. If the user didn't choose from the options in the beginning, they will be automatically directed to the general mental health questionnaire by default.
How we built it
We built this program using Virtual Studio Code and programmed it using Java.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was debugging as we had a few issues with Class paths and other similar errors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to overcome some pretty tricky bugs in our code as they were errors that we have never heard before. Although it was challenging and we did not figure out every single error that easily, it was still a big feat and it was extremely gratifying to be able to see our programming skills improving real time.
What we learned
Through our research of mental health in specific, we have learned about a plethora of different resources that are available 24/7 that are extremely helpful but not entirely talked about. For programming in specific, we learned more about compile time and runtime errors which we previously didn't know about which allowed us to better understand classes in java and how they are recognized and ran by the computer.
What's next for Inner Strength Initiative Mental Health Education Outreach
Our next goal is to expand this program to be more interactive than just code in the command line. We plan to create a game/app which still holds the same information but helps in keeping the audience engaged and excited to learn about these topics.
