Inspiration
I enjoy creative writing and have always been interested in how language can be adapted to different situations and tones. However, many students struggle to clearly express their ideas, whether they are trying to understand a concept, rewrite their thoughts, or create notes for studying.
I built InkNotes to help students communicate their ideas more effectively. The goal was to create a simple tool that could explain topics clearly, rewrite text in different tones, and generate short notes. By using AI, I wanted to make learning and writing more accessible and creative for students.
What it does
InkNotes is an AI-powered writing assistant designed for students. It helps users understand topics, improve their writing, and generate notes in different tones.
The app provides three main features:
Explain a Topic – generates clear explanations to help students understand subjects quickly. Create a Short Note – generates notes or creative responses in different tones such as simple, formal, or poetic. Rewrite Text – rewrites existing text to improve clarity or adapt it to a different tone.
How I built it
I built InkNotes using Python and Streamlit to create a simple and interactive web interface where users can choose what they want to do, such as explaining a topic, rewriting text, or creating short notes in different tones.
To generate the AI responses, the app uses Amazon Nova through AWS Bedrock. When a user enters a topic or text, the application sends that input to the Nova model, which then generates a response based on the selected mode and tone.
The app processes the user’s input, creates a prompt for the AI model, and then displays the generated output directly in the Streamlit interface.
Challenges I ran into
One of the main challenges was understanding how to correctly integrate Amazon Nova through AWS Bedrock. The API required careful formatting of requests and handling authentication properly.
Another challenge was debugging issues related to environment configuration, dependencies, and connecting the application with the correct AWS credentials.
Designing prompts that produced clear and useful responses was also an important part of the development process.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is participating in a hackathon and building this project on my own. This was my first hackathon, and I worked on the idea, development, and implementation of the application independently. I’m also proud that I was able to turn my idea into a working application. Throughout the development process, I faced several technical challenges, especially while integrating AWS services and debugging errors, but I was able to work through those problems and complete the project. Finishing the project and building a functional AI-powered app from scratch was a rewarding experience and showed me that I can take an idea, develop it step by step, and create something real and usable.
What I learned
This project provided valuable experience working with AI models and cloud services. I learned how to integrate Amazon Nova with a Python application and how to build an interactive interface using Streamlit. I also gained experience with debugging API integrations, managing virtual environments, and using GitHub for version control. Most importantly, I learned how thoughtful prompt design and user interface design can make AI tools more helpful and accessible for real users.
What's next for InkNotes
In the future, I would like InkNotes to become a more personalized learning and writing assistant for students. One improvement would be allowing students to paste their own text, class material, or notes into the app so that InkNotes can help simplify the content and make it easier to understand.
Another feature I would like to add is the ability for students to enter their subject or syllabus, and the app could generate personalized notes based on their study topics. This would help students organize their learning and quickly create useful study material.
I would also like to add the ability to save and edit notes inside the application, so students can keep their generated notes and improve them over time.
Another improvement would be allowing conversations or notes to be saved locally, so students can access their previous work even without an internet connection.
Finally, I would like to expand InkNotes into a mobile application so that it can be easily used by students anywhere. My goal is to make it a free and accessible learning tool that helps students understand concepts and express their ideas more clearly.
