Inspiration
Accurate information is critical for effective decision-making. However, distinguishing factual content from misleading or biased information is increasingly difficult. We wanted to build a solution that helps users understand and assess information accurately.
What it does
InforMATE is an AI-powered Chrome extension that helps users evaluate the accuracy of online information, including news headlines and tweets. The tool either extracts text from the active tab, or allows users to input text, and sends this information to a combination of 11 trained AI models. It then leverages the trained AI models to provide an accuracy score. It also supports multilingual content via Google Translate API, ensuring global applicability.
How we built it
We build a chrome extension using Javascript on the frontend, which shows a popup that has a button. We worked on training different classification models using datasets collected from Kaggle. These models then take a news article or twitter posts and output a percentage accuracy for that. The model was called by the Flask backend, which would then send the response to the frontend to display the accuracy on the popup.
Challenges we ran into
Training some of the models took a lot of time, and some of the models that were trained were too big to include in the project. Some of the DOM elements were difficult to manipulate with JavaScript.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have a working project, where the chrome extensions outputs quantitative value for the accuracy. We are proud of the variety of models that we have trained and implemented.
What we learned
We learnt how to make chrome extensions, developed understanding of how to train models and build stable predictions. We also developed our understanding of version control.
What's next for InforMATE
We are hoping to extend this chrome extension to also detect accuracy of research papers, economic predictions. This would likely be done by training more models on a broader range of data sources.
