Inspiration
We were deeply inspired by websites like Wikileaks and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), teams with the desire of uncovering information and the truth. We were also heavily inspired by Wikipedia for the format of the website, due to its clear-cut and concise presentation of information.
What does it do?
InfoBay's articles are divided into five categories - Military and Conflict, Climate Change and Environmental incidents, Political Corruption, Humanitarian Crises and Crimes, and Corporate Corruption. Within each of the categories contains articles surrounding each of these categories. Moreover, we also added links at the bottom of each article, offering the opportunity to explore more into each article we write about.
How we built it
The website was built using Dokuwiki - an open-source and free wiki software. The pages are each saved in a text file, written with simple markup language. The template of the website is derived from Kiwiki.
Challenges we ran into
Our team are novices in designing Wikis, as such, it took considerable effort to learn and understand how Dokuwiki worked. It was also gruelling and tough to find sources and write up about each of the topics that we did, owing to either the sheer depth of information or lack thereof
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact we were able to create a platform that allow users to be able to learn and understand many topics and issues that are faced by people globally.
What we learned
We learnt about wars, scandals, corruption and other events that we were previously unaware of. We also learnt how to utilize Dokuwiki syntax and its format to create InfoBay. Moreover, we also learnt the imaginative and concise ways in which Wikipedia is designed to make it easy to read and access for users.
What's next for InfoBay
We hope to increase the number of articles that can be found on InfoBay. Moreover, we also hope that we can find more people willing to create and edit articles.
