Inspiration

Inspired by iconic dungeon crawlers such as Slay the Spire and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, our team sought to adapt the rogue-like genre into an engaging multiplayer adventure fit for a mobile audience. Infinity Quest uses environmental storytelling to transport players to their own adventure through conquering the ever-changing Infinity Dungeon.

What it does

Infinity Quest players find themselves crawling through the procedurally generated levels of the Infinity Dungeon while fighting mobs, collecting gold, and strengthening their character throughout each run. Players must collect a key on each floor to advance to the next level and can upgrade their stats in shops they come across with the gold they loot during each adventure. On the final floor, players fight alongside each other to kill the final boss before turning against each other to fight fight for the throne of Dungeon Master!

How we built it

Our 3 person team came up with fun ways to overcome limitations certain limitations and challenges encountered as first-time Meta Horizon Worlds developers. Our team leader Thrill (he/him) functioned as our lead designer, leading the vision for the gameplay and art style. He programmed alongside WireWhiz (he/him), who designed the forward-thinking scripting we used to maximize the potential of the Horizons Desktop Editor. PHIA (she/her) worked as our producer through project management and world building.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Procedural dungeon generation
  2. From-scratch animation system
  3. Standout environmental design (custom modeled)
  4. Custom switching camera API

What we learned

There are many differences between the Horizon Worlds Editor versus the other game engines we've worked with before. Those differences (and limitations) forced our team to find creative ways to rethink game development in ways we've never done before. From a development standpoint, we are beyond proud of our accomplishments in what our project brings to Horizon Worlds. We consistently surprised ourselves with innovative thinking which showed clear advancement as developers from start to finish of the project. Our team sees lots of potential for the Horizons Worlds Editor and would love to give feedback to the development team about certain unexpected roadblocks and bugs we struggled with during our process!

What's next for Infinity Quest

There were many things we were unable to fully implement for Infinity Quest due to time constraints! We would love to create multiple dungeon themes that elaborate on the unseen world building elements, increase the complexity of upgrading/leveling systems, and increase the variety of weapons (among other standard quality of life improvement features). We'd also like to include paid expansions for cosmetics/weapons/character classes etc. if our project shows promise in this aspect. Developing for Infinity Quest was a joy, and we hope the judges and players enjoy their experience so we may have the opportunity to continue expanding the Infinity Quest universe.
