Inspiration
Our inspiration for Infinity Learning was the idea that despite students’ ways of thinking being so diverse, schools are often structured with a “one-size fits all” approach. Due to this approach, students who are neurodivergent or have any sort of learning disability, often end up feeling unsupported and may struggle just because the school system was not written for them.
What it does
Infinity Learning is a platform designed to give students a personalized learning experience. The website contains many common courses available for schools to use to assign homework and practices for their students.
Additionally, for any courses an instructor may want to add into Infinity Learning, there is an option to “import curriculum”. Instructors/schools may reference either the course textbook, a site, or search with the course name to find a book or site, and our artificial intelligence system will scan the information and provide sets of topics/lessons. From these sets of topics, an instructor can then assign practices for their students.
Infinity Learning personalizes students' learning experiences through an algorithm that analyzes how a student answers different types of questions and how long it takes them for a response, additionally providing various information in different ways and seeing what the student is most receptive to. This is done in an initial “test” given to each student at the start of each course. After the data is collected, the students’ study mode, review, and homework are then designed around what method of learning suited them best, whether that be readings, video explanation, memorization based learning, interactive media based learning, or problem practices.
How we built it
We designed the website using EditorX.com, this is a program that uses Wix Editor, and turns it into a collaborative platform.
While we have not designed the pattern-recognition and categorization algorithm to analyze students, and the artificial intelligence program to scan a book or website and divide the curriculum into topics, we believe both are very achievable. For the latter, we may implement an already existing AI to run that for Infinity Learning, and for the former we would require the assistance of someone skilled in that kind of programming.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into several challenges on the design front of this project. While being passionate about our idea, our unfamiliarity with the design program stunted our creativity. We spent a lot of time considering all aspects of our program, and how to make sure it was inclusive to a wide range of students, such as adding language and text-to-speech options immediately upon reaching the website. However after spending a large amount of time on identifying problems and how to fix them, we weren’t left with plenty of time to code, so we had to stick with designing. Once we decided to design, we struggled even more with the formatting and the program as we were all unfamiliar with it and grew frustrated.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are happy with the idea of an AI-based education website since it encourages accessibility and inclusivity in terms of learning, which is often neglected. We are also proud of the website design, since we designed it to cater it towards neurodivergent students. For example, we made sure to use muted/pastel colors for the color scheme, used a font without serifs, made any important buttons more noticeable, and we added options for the students to personalize the website to their liking. Students can change the font size, the mode of the website (Light Mode/Dark Mode/Muted Colors/Inverted Colors Mode), and they can also choose a text-to-speech option that allows for any text on the website to be read out loud to them.
What we learned
Creating a website isn’t easy, especially when designing for people who are neglected or not considered, a lot of the features we want to implement aren’t even options in programs we used. Beyond just learning, there is a lot of work around accessibility needed across most technological platforms. We learned how to choose specific design implementations for our website layout, as well as how to create a learning-based online platform that is unique amongst other learning platforms.
What's next for Infinity Learning
Infinity Learning works by utilizing AI to analyze a student’s learning style and cater a specific curriculum towards it. The next step would be to design an AI system that can take the data from a student’s responses and analyze it, and using that information, design lesson plans and assignments that mold into that student’s learning style. As well as implementing our “import” function for instructors to add in their own curriculum if they do not see it represented on our site.
