Inspiration

Infinite Layers wants to reimagine the classic concept of transforming a blank space into a living, breathing art experience—one that grows with every visitor’s creativity and becomes a vessel for collective memory. Inspired by collaborative art installations, we envisioned an AR experience where users can obliterate a sterile white room with colorful digital stickers and photos. Just as architecture holds the stories of those who pass through it, Infinite Layers transforms digital spaces into evolving tapestries of shared memories.

What it does

Infinite Layers AR invites users to put on AR glasses and step into a completely white living space. Using AR, they can place digital stickers and upload photos anywhere they like, transforming the room into a dynamic, ever-changing canvas of color, creativity, and memory. Each visitor’s contribution adds a new layer to the collective experience—turning a blank canvas into a living archive of every interaction.

How we built it

We built Infinite Layers AR using Lens Studio, Snap’s AR creation platform. Lens Studio provided a robust framework for real-time AR interactions, letting us design an intuitive interface where users can place digital stickers and photos on white surfaces using AR glasses. We leveraged plane detection and surface tracking to anchor digital content consistently, ensuring it sticks to physical surfaces even as users move around. A Firebase backend handles real-time updates and synchronization, so every visitor sees the evolving digital art installation instantly—like a collaborative memory in motion.

What we learned

Building a seamless collaborative AR experience required constant balancing between design and performance. We faced challenges with:

  • Maintaining accurate sticker placement in varying lighting conditions.
  • Handling real-time updates while keeping the experience smooth.
  • Designing intuitive UI/UX within the constraints of AR glasses.

What's next for Infinite Layers AR

  • Memory per location: We want to let users leave a lasting digital mark tied to specific real-world spaces, so that each visit feels uniquely theirs—like a memory etched into the architecture itself.
  • Generative AI: Enabling on-the-fly sticker creation with AI to expand creativity.
  • Community collaboration: Bringing local artists and communities into the experience to co-create site-specific installations and deepen the sense of place and shared memory.
