Inspiration

A healer's remedy, a farmer's forecast, a craftsman's technique these are not just memories, but India's undocumented wisdom, which are disappearing with the elders who hold it . We're mapping and preserving it before it's lost. According to UNESCO, Intangible Cultural Heritage includes the knowledge, skills, and traditions that communities recognize as part of their cultural heritage. As generations move away from these traditional practices, this valuable knowledge is slowly disappearing. When the person holding it passes away, his knowledge, his ideas, the techniques he knew are gone with him. While researching about this topic we came across few foundations which are doing valuable work for documenting stories and traditions. Inspired from this we are creating a community driven platform where anyone can contribute and share their knowledge

This project is not meant to be another archive. It encourages communities to actively document and share their knowledge, ensuring it remains accessible for future generations.

What it does

India's Undocumented Wisdom is a community-driven platform that allows people to document and preserve traditional knowledge that is often passed down only through word of mouth. Users can contribute stories, remedies, farming techniques, local innovations, craft methods, food traditions, folklore, and other forms of indigenous knowledge. Each contribution is organized by category and location, making it easier for others to discover and learn from it.

This project brings together all four pillars of STEM,

  • Science — every entry is checked against existing research to flag whether it's medically or scientifically validated, partially validated, or unverified
  • Technology — a full MERN-stack platform (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) with a REST API and an interactive Leaflet.js map plotting real geographic coordinates
  • Engineering — structured MongoDB schema design, a CSV-to-database import pipeline, and a client-server architecture built to scale past the initial dataset
  • Mathematics — a Naive Bayes classifier applies probabilistic text classification to power search ranking, using word-frequency likelihoods to match relevant entries

How we built it

Tech stack:

  • Frontend: React (Vite) — dedicated components for browsing, searching, remedy details, scientific validation status, and community feedback
  • Backend: Node.js + Express — REST API for listing, retrieving, and voting on entries
  • Search: a Naive Bayes classifier for ranking and matching search results
  • Database: MongoDB — storing category, region, coordinates, science-check status, source, and engagement metrics per entry

Accomplishments that we're proud of

we're proud that our project combines technology with cultural preservation, showing how digital platforms can help protect knowledge for future generations.

What we learned

We learned the importance of researching existing solutions before building our own. Understanding the work already being done helped us identify how our platform could contribute in a meaningful way.

What's next for India's Undocumented Wisdom

Some of the features we plan to add include: -AI-powered categorization of submissions. -Voice recording and transcription in regional languages. -Community moderation and expert verification. -Multilingual support for contributors across India. -Interactive maps to explore knowledge by region.
