Inspiration
In this big vast world, it is hard to find someone else to connect to. We often find friends that have similar interests with us. However, not everyone shows off their interests on publicly. Some people might prefer to be anonymous with their niche interests, and only share it with people who share the same niche interests.
We took inspiration from when2meet.com, keeping it simple and easy to use.
What it does
incommon is a web app to connect people with niche interests within a larger group (i.e. nwhacks, student clubs, or degree programs). Members of the larger group can anonymously post niche interests, and their identity is not revealed until enough people (set by the poster) say they are also interested in the niche interest.
How we built it
We mainly used javascript and react, and iterated on small improvements on a rolling basis.
Challenges we ran into
Due to the limited amount of time and manpower, we had to start small and deal with the improvements one step at a time, instead of over-commiting and not achieving anything. We had to prioritize getting the frontend and logic to work, over hosting it on a database.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are able to get this done, even with the time and manpower constraint!
What I learned
React is pretty good! I brushed up my Javascript skills, and gained some knowledge in React, domain hosting, and DNS servers.
What's next for incommon
We plan to slowly roll out more functionality, and host our database on the cloud.
