The project will address the lack of involvement of persons with a determination in physical education in the school system in the Gambia. This is intended to be done through the training of Trainers (Physical Education Teachers) and the inclusion of the contents in the curriculum of the Gambia College Physical Education course for Primary and Secondary School Teachers. This will not only create more awareness on the management of persons with Determination in the school system, but also increase the level of self-confidence of the affected students and increase participation from school to elite athletes.
Background and justification This idea was born out of the lived experiences of the members of the GNPC. All members that have been through the education system in the Gambia at all levels have had to deal with a common experience, being left out during physical education lessons. The obvious reason being, the Physical Education teachers do not know how to engage persons with Determination into the sport practices. This rather difficult experience, haven’t had any initiative to address it and young persons with Determination still have to go through this experience in education system and to a larger extend in the communities. As every child is endowed with the natural instinct of the urge to play, the GNPC finds it imperative to train trainers and coordinate the implementation of the knowledge sharing process among the large pool of stakeholders in the national education system. Furthermore, the following are further justifications:
Lack of persons with knowledge on para sports in the school system. Trained personnel on working with persons with Determination are not working in the school system nor with the GNPC. Kids with Determination also deserve an opportunity in sport. Propagation of knowledge on Para sports and treatment of people with disability – an avenue for sensitization. Lack of a pool of teachers with knowledge on Para sports. Curtail effect of drop-outs of people with Determination in education
Objectives
- Train trainers of teachers on inclusive education through sport
- Develop a module as part of PE teachers training content at the Gambia College
Benefits The realization of this project is expect to benefit not only young persons with Determination in the Gambian education system but also a pool of other stakeholders in and outside the country. This project will be an opportunity to further promote awareness on how to manage people with Determination especially at a younger age. People with Determination have the same right to practice sport on the right conditions in and outside the school timetable, this project therefore will serve as the platform for the fulfilment of this universal human right many in the Gambia have been denied. The Government of the Gambia ratified the Convention on the Rights with Persons with Disabilities in 2013. This step demonstrates the will of the Government to uplift the standard of persons with Determination in the country. Furthermore, the national education policy of the Gambia (2016-2030) provides for the “Non-discriminatory and all-inclusive provision of education underlining in particular, gender equity and targeting of the poor and the disadvantaged groups”. However, this aim is far from being a reality for now and this project could serve as the right opportunity to realize this aim for disadvantaged groups in the school system. This project, in the long run, can have an impact in the schools at all levels in the country from Early Childhood Development to Tertiary Education. This will also include a consideration of the Madrasas (Arabic Schools) which are sometimes also excluded from programmes of the education system. The promotion and propagation of the Paralympic sports, values and principles has also been a challenge to the GNPC most especially in covering the whole country. The capacity building of the teachers who are posted into the most remote parts of the country will not only be an opportunity to promote Paralympic sport in the country, but also help the GNPC achieve this aim in the Gambia. The GNPC has also had challenges of reaching all corners of the country to exploit the potentials in sports of young persons with Determination, the trained teachers will be capacitated with the right skills to develop and scout talents for the GNPC in the the school system and communities in general throughout the whole country. This will also add to the pool of the GNPC Membership and facilitate the establishment of solid structures throughout the whole country in the near future. The GNPC has since inception been grappling with a pool of trained technicians with vast knowledge on Paralympic sport and managing persons with Determination. This project also intends to address the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education) and 10 (reduce inequalities) in the Gambia. Feasibility
- The Gambia government already ratified UN convention in 2013.
- Consideration in National Education Policy.
- The government already contracts teachers in the education system.
- Availability of Physical Education course at the Gambia College.
- Availability of locally trained personnel at the GNPC.
- GNPC has experience on project management.
- Work plan The first phase of the training of trainers will cover key areas such as introduction to Paralympic sports, Module Book, on terms used in disability, physical exercises for different types of persons with Determination and with different age groups as well as familiarizing participants with equipment of persons with Determination most especially in sport. Moreover, how to use and manage them. The second phase will cover Paralympic sports classifications, contextualizing sport participation when working with persons with Determination within the available local facilities as well as how to improvise with exercises for an all-inclusive Physical Education lesson. The training programme and subsequent integration of the validated contents into the Physical Education course contents of the Gambia College will further facilitate the implementation of other programme as complementary aspect towards the inclusive physical education classes envisaged in the Gambia education system and society at large.
