πΊπΈ Inspiration
As July 4th approached, we wanted to create something meaningful β something that honored the heroes who have served and sacrificed for our country. We were inspired by the idea that digital tools can preserve memory, express gratitude, and connect generations. Many families have stories passed down but never recorded β our goal was to give those memories a lasting digital home. βIn Honor Ofβ was built to help families and communities keep the legacy of veterans alive.
π‘ What It Does
- Users fill out a short form with tribute details:
- Name of honoree
- Branch of service
- Era/conflict, years served, and unit
- Reason for honoring, medals, and personal message
- Upload photos
- The app creates a personalized tribute page
- Designed specifically for each military branch
- Includes the tribute details and image gallery
- Users can share the tribute or feature it on the homepage with a small donation
- All public tributes are displayed on a Wall of Honor with filters for branch and era
Itβs designed to be respectful, emotional, and easy to use β especially around patriotic holidays like Independence Day.
βοΈ How We Built It
- Frontend: Next.js + Tailwind CSS
- Backend & Auth: Supabase (PostgreSQL, Row-Level Security, Auth)
- File Storage: Supabase buckets (for tribute photos)
- Deployment: Netlify
- Design: Focused on clarity, accessibility, and a solemn, respectful tone
π§ Challenges We Ran Into
- Balancing visual design across multiple military branches while keeping layout consistency
- Creating a flow that feels personal and heartfelt without overwhelming users
- Ensuring file uploads, data privacy, and public tributes are handled securely
- Building a submission system that works smoothly without requiring accounts
