Inspiration

The issue of gender inequality in the U.S. is one that continues to negatively impact young girls and women. Victims of this vast, systematic discrimination are largely silenced by discriminators, being forced to accept systematic inequality and bias against them simply because of their gender. Because of the normalization of this discrimination and even encouragement of discriminatory behaviors (especially in work environments), women continue to struggle in their fight to oppose gender inequality.

We hoped that we would be able to shed light on the discrimination that women endure throughout their lives, and raise awareness about this topic, through our website.

What it does

Our app was created to inform people about the issue of gender inequality in states throughout the U.S. by displaying color cards showing facts about gender discrimination/inequality. We also have a ranking page that displays the best and worst states in regards to women's health and wealth. Finally, we also created a chatbot that tells users the stories of influential female figures in each state.

How we built it

We built our website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, hosting the website on Qoom. We created our chatbot using IBM Watson.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was integrating our chatbot into our website. Aside from that, we also struggled quite a bit with coming up with an idea for our website, as it took us time to think of a good idea, along with developing our website (i.e. creating the ranking page, storing information in lists, etc.).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to create a user-friendly website that can inform the general public about the issue of inequality, as well as create an informative chatbot, which tells the stories of many inspirational female role models.

What we learned

Through our project, we learned that the issue of gender inequality is more pressing than it seems, and that it affects many more facets of our lives than we originally thought. Aside from learning about gender inequalities, we also learned about the stories of many amazing and inspiring women who defied the gender norms in their respective era, and changed history as we know it.

What's next for In Her Shoes

Our future goals for "In Her Shoes" include expanding our dataset to include information for all countries so that we would be able to inform more people of the issue of gender inequality. We also hope that we can write about many more sheros from countries all around the world.
