Inspiration
Our team wanted to address the Best GameDev Hack, Best Beginner Hack, and the Funniest Hack all at once! To do this, we chose to go for the nittiest grittiest game that we could make. With a little bit of humor incorporated, the game transformed into a escape-the-lab scenario of a rogue AI bent on survival.
What it does
This plays as any normal game. However, the story follows our lonely AI as he attempts to escape from a space colony ruled over by Teddy Bears. What does that do? Provide fun for at least an hour as you try to figure out what placed our lonely, lovable 003 into this position.
How we built it
We built this through the Unity Game Engine with the parts broken up between each of the devs. We handled map design, character rigging and animations, scripting, and audio separately and then mixed them together to make a great finale.
Challenges we ran into
Unity was an engine that not everyone on the team was accustomed to, so we had quite a few challenges in the beginning. However, we fixed that as a team and managed to get on the same page in terms of skill pretty quickly. An issue that was prevalent throughout the project was that our IDEs were not able to assist as much during event scripting but we fixed that after about ten hours of staring at the Unity documentation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the efficiency with which we worked as a team. We are also proud of the entire project as it is one of our largest projects that any of us have worked on.
What we learned
For some of us, we learned how to effectively use the Unity Game Engine. Others learned the intense process of game development. All of us learned the value of all nighters.
What's next for IMRobot
IMRobot is going to expand the story even more than it is currently, as well as bring in new characters and assets to expand the world. We plan on smoothing out animations and upgrading the UI as well as making significant changes to lighting and rigging.
IMRobot is premiering on the PlayStation 5 in 2021.
