Inspiration

My inspiration for this website has been this last whole year in quarantine. I think it is pretty clear that now since everyone is at home, we're more glued to our phones and we're paying more attention to the news, especially those violent hate crimes, police brutality, mass shootings, and so so much more. As a result, I personally was thrown into the world of activism with not that much experience and so much to learn. I really wished that there was a single place at which I could really learn about the terms used in activism, what I could do, and what to avoid. All of this was was my inspiration, I wanted to create a website that provided the basic tools needed to get started in activism.

What it does

The website is an interactive experience where you can not only learn about different terms and concepts, but you can follow links to different articles and watch the embedded YouTube videos to get a more visual sense. At the top of the screen, you'll always have our navigation links to take you to different pages, and in our resources page, you can click on the headings to be taken to Instagram and TikTok.

How I built it

I built this website using repl.it, it's an interface I am fairly adjusted to. The languages I used were HTML and CSS, and anything I did not know or needed help with, I used different CS websites or played around with until it worked out!

Navigation

Important: My video of the navigation does not have sound, however, when I recorded it, it said it would have sound, so that is why it might look a bit odd that I was hanging on to some the pages for a long time, I was narrating but it did not get picked up. The first page I show is the home page which has the tagline and the title as well who made it (me of course) and the navigation bar at the top. I then go to the "What is Activism" page which defines activism, has a video imbedded from CBC Kids about activism, and further goes into detail. After this, we move on to the "How can I become an Activist" page which explains how to get involved, has a great Vox article linked, as well as a video about performative activism. At the very bottom of the page, there is a link to the resources page, which is also in the navigation bar. The resources page talks about some of the resources you can use, links to Instagram, TikTok, and various websites, and features creators who I suggest to follow as they are super informative. I then move on to the code that I made, which is all hosted on repl.it. I described how I used HTML as well as CSS and that each webpage had its own file.

Challenges I ran into

I ran into quite a few design challenges. At first I did not know how to create different background images for each webpage, and I had difficulties with the navigation bar not working properly due to file names. Embedding the YouTube videos was a process, especially because every time I tried to open YouTube on my laptop, the whole web browser froze and needed to reload. Even though these problems were difficult to get through, I was able to work through them by using the debugging skills I have been taught in my AP CS classes and summer programs. Anything I really had difficulty with, I consulted Google and it was extremely helpful, but mostly I wanted to figure things out by myself.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

I am proud that I was able to create a functioning website in 24 hours, I have never been able to do that by myself, so I am really surprised. I am also so proud that I was able to create a useful resource that will help people begin their activism journey!

What I learned

I learned how to imbed YouTube videos into HTML webpages, I learned how create a centered navigation bar, I learned how to make unique backgrounds for each webpage, and I even learned how to navigate Discord and Devpost (never used before) better!

What's next for Improve your Activism!

I plan on adding more resources and expanding on the explanations I already created so that they are more detailed and hopefully more informative. Lack of time really got me on the resources page because I also would have added books, YouTube lectures, and linked each creator individually to their @, but those are my future plans. I also want to publicly publish this as a website, but as it is still a prototype, I am going to keep coding and fixing some details and publish it sometime soon!

Thank you so much for this opportunity, it has been great, and I appreciate all the hard work that you guys put into this!
