Inspiration In the speech and debate world, Impromptu is a competitive speech event that requires speakers to think on their feet and deliver a 5-minute speech according to a given prompt with minimal preparation. They are then graded on a rubric that determines their placing in a round. Such improvisational skills require much practice. Creating a social platform that doubles as a training ground facilitates just that, combining human feedback, AI evaluation, and community. Our ImPromptU is inspired by the need for confident speakers, and more so the environment it takes for them to thrive. But this expands out into so much of our world. Public speaking has always been a valuable skill. It is not just about winning a mere competition, it is about raising a generation of world-changers.
Project Description (Capabilities and Background) ImPromptu is an AI-powered public speaking coach that helps users improve their presentation skills through automated feedback. Users can record or upload a speech, and the application evaluates important speaking categories such as eye contact, confidence, voice clarity, speaking pace, body language, and organization. Instead of waiting for feedback from a coach or teacher, users receive instant AI-generated scores and personalized suggestions after every speech. Our goal was to make high-quality public speaking practice more accessible, interactive, and available anytime.
Challenges and Successes
One of the biggest challenges we faced was integrating all of the technologies into one working application. Connecting the frontend to the backend, integrating AI tools such as MediaPipe and Whisper, and handling video uploads required a great deal of debugging and testing. Although these issues took time to solve, they helped us better understand full-stack development and AI integration. By the end of the hackathon, we successfully built a working prototype that combines speech recording, AI-powered analysis, and personalized feedback into one easy-to-use platform.

ImPromptU fits well with the automation theme because it uses artificial intelligence to automatically analyze a user's public speaking performance. Instead of requiring a coach to manually evaluate a speech, the application provides instant feedback on eye contact, confidence, voice clarity, speaking pace, body language, and organization. It also generates personalized suggestions to help users improve after every speech. This saves time, makes speech practice more accessible, and allows users to receive feedback whenever they need it. By automating the evaluation process, ImPromptU helps people practice public speaking more efficiently and consistently.
