Problem

The sudden fall in interactions between students and their institutes after the pandemic has resulted in uncertainty in grades, a fall in attendance, reduced collaboration among the students, and some extreme cases, delay in graduation.

"Student absenteeism skyrocketed in the pandemic as test scores plunged" - Washington Post

Solution

Impetus

Impetus incentivizes students to go to their classes daily. The students will be rewarded points to attend their classes, and rewards can be used to get gift cards from local merchants or big online brands. It will increase overall class attendance and interaction among students, and result in higher overall GPA and graduation.

How we built it

We built Impetus using Java language in Android studio with the help of Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

1) Finding a solution to reward, and authentic students' presence in the class. 2) Retrieving & Inserting data into various Firebase databases together. 3) Android studio recycler view for various users. 4) User Authentication using Firebase Auth.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that even after running into many problems with Firebase, we didn't give up, and we could make the complete app within 36 hours.

What's next for Impetus

1) Refining the database more for filter options. 2) Creating a new reward system for student organizations on campus, and working on how we can add RFID student cards to the system which will allow us to reward students with a swipe to the library, gym, and many other places on campus. 3) Adding non-monetary rewards for the users. For, e.g Extra credit for the class, excused absence, and many others. 4) Identifying and partnering with local businesses in and around the Ohio University campus. 5) Working on the IOS version, publishing it on the app stores, and doing our first class testing by next semester.
