Inspiration

Having gotten sick more than three times at school, I grew annoyed of trying to catch up to the rest of the class. It seemed as if the teachers gave more content the days I was absent. Even when I tried to use my friends' notes or videos of the lecture, I would sometimes find myself stuck without a teacher to help me with my confusion. Consequently, I decided to create an app that would help prevent these problems — Impersonate.

What it does

Impersonate is an application that will use a recording of your teacher’s lecture to create a virtual reality version of your teacher and classroom. In this virtual setting, not only can you listen to the lecture in a realistic environment but also, whenever you are confused about a concept, you can even ask your question out loud. The Impersonate application uses Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to understand the concept, and the teacher’s methodology to teach the concept With this information, the application can identify the topics being taught and then provide feedback to you in a similar manner to how your teacher would. Thus, when you ask a question to the virtual version of your teacher, the application will recognize that you are speaking and then it will answer your question using the context of the recorded lecture, giving you a more complete experience than watching a simple recording of the class. Furthermore, by the end of the session, you will even receive notes and key takeaways from the application as well. This allows you to be able to pay full attention to the teacher and still have notes to remember the lecture by.

How is it Unique?

Although everyone can always use a simple recording to catch up in class and perhaps use an external AI assistant, this application, Impersonate, provides a unique aspect — the virtual reality setting. The reason this aspect makes this application an amazing idea is because virtual reality prevents distractions. In online education, distractions are heavily present, causing the hours of recordings to go to waste. However, with virtual reality, students can’t be distracted due to the virtual reality headset placed upon their head. In virtual reality, the students are only able to watch the lecture with no distractions of their phones, friends, or other things around them

What's next for Impersonate

After the foundation of this idea has been built, one potential improvement could be to allow its users to create one of two different types of accounts — student or teacher. Although the functionality of the student account would have the basic functionality of the application — watching lectures in virtual reality, asking questions, and receiving notes — the functionality of the teacher account would allow its users to create their own videos directly on the app so that other students can learn. There is another potential improvement. Once the application has had several lectures uploaded to it, the application can analyze each video. If the video uploaded has highly detailed information but the student is not very knowledgeable on the subject, the application can simplify the lecture to make it easier to understand. This improvement would allow for more effective learning.
