Inspiration

Net Zero in Pieces is an interactive experience that inspires action towards a sustainable future. By visualizing the journey to net zero, we empower individuals to make meaningful lifestyle changes that collectively contribute to a healthier planet.

What it does

Through engaging animations, we illustrate the environmental impact of personal actions, providing customized recommendations based on daily habits. This journey helps individuals see how small changes can lead to significant progress. We envision a future where individuals and communities achieve net zero together, making sustainability accessible, fun, and impactful.

How we built it

We built Net Zero in Pieces using Flask as the backend framework, integrating HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an interactive and user-friendly interface. The project incorporates a machine learning model using Spacy for natural language processing to categorize items into broader categories based on their carbon footprint.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we faced was ensuring accurate categorization of items, especially when dealing with ambiguous inputs or when items did not directly match predefined categories. We also had difficulty finding data on item specific carbon footprints, so we had to create our own data to combat this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the visualization aspect of the website. The interactive carousel for character selection and overall web-design, we believe, would be appealing to users.

What we learned

We deepened our knowledge in Javascript, HTML and CSS as well as working with both backend and frontend frameworks.

What's next for Net Zero in Pieces

The next step for Net Zero in Pieces is to further expand the database of items and refine the categorization model to improve its accuracy. We also aim to incorporate more detailed carbon impact calculations and introduce suggestions for reducing users' carbon footprints based on their selected actions.
