Inspiration
Our app helps increase awareness about sustainability for students. We were inspired by the fact that not a lot of schools have sustainability programs or resources to educate students on the importance of sustainability. We hope this app can create a positive impact for students to be sustainable, so we can help improve our environment.
What it does
The app offers four main features: A reverse camera search/scanner that detects a product and gives an environmental impact score and provides sustainable alternatives when the product scanned is deemed poor or bad for the environment. We plan to generate the environmental impact score and provide sustainable alternatives by using training data from thousands of high-quality sources. Users are also provided a list of sustainability challenges as a way to get more involved with sustainability and earn prizes for their deeds. A social component that enables them to view how other users of the app are completing their challenges and compare carbon footprints. A game called Sort ‘em that furthers knowledge on sustainability through recycling practices.
How we built it
We first conducted primary and secondary research to gauge students’ awareness and general attitude surrounding sustainability and guide our app design. We used Figma to design and prototype the app. We also experimented with different colors and icons to create compelling visuals.
Challenges we ran into
Time constraint: It was very hard trying to find time for all of us to meet. Since we’re all college students, we have different schedules and other responsibilities. Due to time constraints, we didn’t have enough time in our presentation to go over in-depth the features that we created for our prototype. We also didn’t have enough time to test our prototype with users and reiterate our designs to improve it. There were times when it was hard for our whole team to agree or go with a certain idea because we each had our own perspectives of what would be best for our project. It took a while for us to decide and agree together on what specific topic we wanted to work on at the beginning of our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to develop our idea in just a matter of days.
What we learned
We learned how to conduct user research, wireframing, prototyping, and UX/UI design. We also learned how to collaborate in a cross-functional team
What's next for Impact
Make each level of Sort 'em more challenging as the user progresses. Allow users to get personalized recommendations.
