Inspiration
- We were inspired by the power of stokvels in South Africa, which manage over R50 billion annually and provide financial stability for millions. Despite their importance, many still rely on outdated manual methods that lead to fraud risks, poor record-keeping, and mistrust. We wanted to combine technology with transparency to protect and grow community savings.
What it does
- ImaliTrust is a secure digital platform that enables stokvel members to track contributions, payouts, and group savings in real time. It offers AI-powered fraud alerts, financial insights, and clear digital records accessible to all members—making group saving safer, more transparent, and easier to manage.
How we built it
- We began with user research to understand common stokvel challenges, then designed a digital-first interface for easy group creation and tracking. We integrated secure access controls, AI-based fraud detection, and simulated EFT/mobile payments during early testing, with future plans for live payment integration.
Challenges we ran into
- Building trust with members used to manual methods. Ensuring security during early development without live payment risks. Designing a scalable system that remains simple for all stokvel types.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a platform that tackles fraud, transparency, and record-keeping in one solution. Designing a user-friendly system accessible even to non-technical members. Building a scalable foundation for future stokvel types beyond savings.
What we learned
- Trust is as important as technology in community finance. AI can be leveraged effectively for early fraud detection. Simplicity in design drives adoption and long-term engagement.
What's next for ImaliTrust
- We plan to integrate secure EFT and mobile money payments, expand to other stokvel types (investment, burial societies, etc.), and introduce advanced analytics to help groups set and achieve bigger financial goals.
