Inspiration
With the rapid growth of AI-generated images, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish real photographs from artificially created visuals. ImagScanner was inspired by the need for a simple tool that helps people identify potentially AI-generated images and make more informed decisions about digital content.
What it does
ImagScanner is an AI-powered image detection platform that analyzes uploaded images to predict whether they are real or AI-generated. It provides users with an easy-to-understand result through a simple interface, helping raise awareness about digital image authenticity and misinformation.
How we built it
We built ImagScanner using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, with Python Flask for backend processing. We explored EfficientNetB0 for machine learning-based image analysis and Hugging Face Inference API for AI model integration. Firebase was used for supporting application services, and Netlify was used to deploy the website.
Challenges we ran into
One of our main challenges was understanding how to distinguish AI-generated images from real photographs reliably. Integrating the frontend with backend services, handling image uploads, connecting AI inference services, and managing deployment were also important challenges. We learned that model predictions can be affected by image quality, compression, and unfamiliar image-generation techniques.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing ImagScanner as a practical project that addresses the growing challenge of digital image authenticity. We brought together web development, machine learning, and AI service integration to create a platform focused on making image analysis accessible and easy to understand.
What we learned
Through ImagScanner, we gained experience in frontend and backend integration, machine learning concepts, AI inference APIs, and web deployment. We also learned the importance of testing model performance, handling user inputs safely, and communicating AI predictions responsibly.
What's next for ImagScanner
Our next steps include improving detection accuracy, evaluating the model against diverse real and AI-generated images, adding clearer confidence indicators, and expanding support for images created by different generative AI tools. We also plan to improve the user experience, strengthen security, and explore explainable AI features that help users understand why an image was flagged as potentially AI-generated.
