Inspiration

We are Tanu Luna and Christopher Marinich, the developers of Illustra XR. We are both fans of graphic literature and we wanted to create a platform that lets you experience, read, and share them in mixed-reality, using the Pico headset. We were inspired by the potential of mixed-reality to enhance the immersion and interactivity of graphic literature, and create new possibilities for storytelling.

What it does

  • The main goal of Illustra XR is to create a fun and immersive VR platform for graphic literature, where users can customize, create, share, and learn from each other and the environment.
  • The target audience of Illustra XR is anyone who loves XR, graphic literature, and user-generated content, ranging from casual to hardcore readers, writers, and educators from different countries, cultures, languages, and backgrounds.
  • The project scope of Illustra XR is very large and ambitious, as it involves developing and maintaining a complex online platform that supports user-generated content, cross-platform compatibility, and scalability, and that is constantly evolving and updating based on user feedback and demand.

How we will build it

We plan to build Illustra XR using the Pico SDK and Unity to create a platform that will let the users experience, read, and share graphic literature in mixed-reality, using the Pico headset.

Challenges we ran into

We faced some challenges while developing our concept design for Illustra XR, such as:

  • Researching the market and the audience for graphic literature in mixed-reality, and finding a niche and a value proposition for our platform.
  • Defining the gameplay mechanics and the features of our platform, and making sure they are fun, engaging, and feasible for the Pico headset and its features.
  • Creating a clear and consistent visual identity and style for our platform, and making sure it matches the theme and the mood of our graphic literature genres.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our concept design for Illustra XR, which we think is a unique and innovative platform that combines the art of graphic literature with the technology of mixed reality. We are proud of our research on the Pico headset and its features, which we think will create an immersive and interactive experience for our users.

What we learned

We learned a lot from researching the Pico headset and its features, such as the Pico Sence Pack and the Pico Interaction Pack, which are features that can create an immersive and interactive experience for our users. We learned how they can use the space calibration feature to map the physical environment to the virtual one, and the spatial anchors to place the graphic literature and the Unity animated scenes in the game world. We learned how they can use the hand tracking feature to manipulate the graphic literature and the environment, such as rotating, scaling, and moving them. We also learned how they can use the voice control feature to navigate the platform and access the menus and options.

What's next for Illustra XR

  • To launch and publish the game on the Pico Store, and reach a large and diverse audience of XR users who love graphic literature.
  • To update and improve the game based on the user feedback and reviews, and add new features, genres, and content to the game.
  • To collaborate and partner with the graphic literature authors, publishers, and communities, and promote and support their work on the platform.
  • To explore and experiment with new and innovative ways of creating, experiencing, reading, and sharing graphic literature in mixed-reality, and redefine the XR medium for graphic literature.
