Inspiration

AI is becoming increasingly important in education at every level. This quick progression of technology in an educational setting has students and teachers needing help becoming accustomed to AI and how to use it properly. AI is a beneficial tool to learn, but first we need to learn how it works! Buffalo Prep is looking to integrate AI into education, and in order to do this, they need resources to train their students and teachers. Learning how AI reads and responds to messages will teach users how to speak to it and, in turn, get useful responses that they can integrate into their educational lives.

IlluminAIte is made to alleviate the need at Buffalo Prep for proper AI education by teaching users how to properly talk to-and learn from- AI.

What it does

IlluminAIte helps students and teachers get familiar with using AI bots properly to help them in an educational setting. It does this in three ways:

Provides snippets of example chat conversations and an explanation for why the bot responds the way it does, and tips on how to chat with an AI.
Quizzes students on the AI lessons to see what they have learned and what goes into properly responding to an AI bot.
Offers a real chat bot, IlluminAIte, that is trained to help students practice their skills talking to AI educationally!

How we built it

We built the web app using Angular with Bootstrap, and the IlluminAIte chat bot with Python and OpenAI.

Challenges we ran into

Training and integrating the chat bot to remember chat history was our biggest challenge. Using OpenAI's API to cater to the purpose of IllumiAIte was challenging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the functionality and content of IlluminAIte! We were able to provide useful training examples, explanations, and questions to kick-start the introduction to AI across Buffalo Prep. The IlluminAIte chat bot is functional and implemented to help students practice communicating with AI for educational purposes.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how to properly explain AI to beginners, and how to build our own AI chat bot!

What's next for IlluminAIte

If we had more time to work on IlluminAIte, we would implement more educational tools and chatbot training. We would make the website catered to all educational groups that exist in Buffalo Prep, with questions focused on the curriculum and content they are learning in school. This way, they can build their AI skills and learn how to use it while also learning content they are given in school! We would also focus on training the IlluminAIte bot more. With more training, it would be able to adjust its responses based on the grade level and experience of the user, as well as adjust its moderation. This would allow for practice catered toward each individual user. Finally, we would love to clean up the design and appearance for IlluminAIte to be visually pleasing and easy to navigate.
