Inspiration
Indigenous communities have been oppressed for centuries and on their own lands, their culture is underrepresented. We have been inspired to tackle the systematic racism against Indigenous people through bringing light of their culture and acknowledgement of their land through Google geolocation API.
What it does
The website provides information about the indigenous culture, and also raises the awareness of how colonizers took the land away from the indigenous people. The interactive map will show people what lands used to belong to the indigenous people.
How we built it
The app prototype was designed using Figma, and it was developed using HTML/CSS. This was many of our first times designing or developing, so it was an incredible learning experience to see how we could implement each other's work - designers + developers. We also looked into the Google Maps API, but did not have time to implement it.
Challenges we ran into
We haven't figured out how to add images to the website, and we didn't have enough time to make the website look exactly like the prototype.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A lot of us as beginners developed our technical skills and learned how to prototype and create a website using HTML.
What we learned
We mainly learned how to use the features of Figma and how to program in HTML. Even though we did not create an app, we learned how to possibly incorporate our ideas into a mobile application, and we also discovered design components through the boot camp’s workshops.
What's next for ILA
We need to finish the map and resource part of the website. For the map we will build a drop-down menu for the choices of locations, and the map will indicate where the indigenous people are located nearby. And for the resources page, we will add links and more information about the indigenous people, their culture, and their lands. We hope to use this project to educate people about history and indigenous culture.
