Inspiration

We have always thought hackathons were a really cool way to bring people together, solve problems and experiment with new ideas. We also recognised that coding is becoming increasingly important across many careers, so we wanted to challenge ourselves to develop our technical skills and explore how technology could solve everyday problems for university students. Through brainstorming together, we came up with an idea for a web app that could help students manage their time more efficiently.

What it does

Our web app aims to help university students organise their schedules and make better use of their time. By helping students identify opportunities in their timetables, the project explores how technology can make student life more efficient and reduce unnecessary wasted time.

How we built it

We started by brainstorming ideas together and discussing the problems we wanted our web app to solve. Once we had settled on our concept, we used AI to generate an initial template for the web app. This gave us a foundation to work from, which we then refined to better match our vision. We experimented with the code, adjusted the design and worked on developing features such as the calendar. We also used AI to help us understand the code and explore ways to improve our application.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was turning our ideas into a functioning web app. Although AI helped us generate an initial template, some features, including the calendar and certain pages, did not load correctly. This meant we had to investigate the code, identify potential errors and refine our approach. We also had to balance our ambitions for the project with the time available during the hackathon, which required us to prioritise features and focus on the core idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we took an idea from an initial brainstorming session and developed it into a web app. As a team, we collaborated to shape our concept, use AI to establish a starting point and refine the result into something that reflected our vision. We are also proud that we challenged ourselves to explore coding and web development, even when we encountered problems we did not immediately know how to solve.

What we learned

We learned that coding involves much more than simply generating code. Building an application requires problem-solving, testing, debugging and continuously refining ideas. We also discovered how AI can be a valuable tool for accelerating development and learning unfamiliar technical skills, but that its output still needs to be evaluated and improved. Most importantly, we learned the value of collaboration, adaptability and being willing to experiment when approaching a new challenge.

What's next for IKU Hackathon Project

Our next step is to continue refining the web app, fixing existing bugs and improving the reliability of its features. We would also like to explore additional functionality that makes the application more useful for university students, while improving its design and user experience. Ultimately, we hope to develop our initial idea into a more complete and practical tool, while continuing to build our coding skills and explore the possibilities of AI-assisted development
