Inspiration

The idea for the Ikigai Purpose-Driven App was born out of the need to help people live more intentionally. We have noticed that most productivity tools are focused on completing tasks. But not on why those tasks matter. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which means “reason for being,” we designed a mobile-first tool that combines emotional wellbeing, purpose discovery, and meaningful productivity. Especially during summer, a season of renewal and reflection.

What it does

Ikigai is a holistic mobile app that combines journaling, mood tracking, a purpose-aligned calendar, AI-guided prompts, learning modules, and social collaboration. Its standout feature is the Summer Purpose Challenge, which invites users to align their personal growth with seasonal micro-activities like sunset journaling or grounding walks. Through a clean and gamified interface, users track their emotional and mental alignment while planning purposeful tasks.

How we built it

We used Figma to prototype the user flows, design system, and all UI elements. The app design incorporates smooth UX patterns tailored for mobile use, with a bright, calming colour palette that reflects the emotion-driven theme. We focused on modular feature cards for each section: Journal, Compass, Calendar, Toolkit, and Circle to allow for future scaling. AI features are integrated conceptually using prompt-driven interactions that can later be built using tools like OpenAI’s API.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was figuring out how to combine productivity with emotional depth without making the app overwhelming. We also struggled to balance utility with creativity, especially when designing features like the Summer Challenge, which needed to feel playful but still purposeful. Integrating journaling with scheduling and community features in a clean user flow was also a tough design problem.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a full experience that feels both structured and human. The Summer Purpose Challenge became our highlight, bringing joy, seasonal relevance, and emotional growth into the app. We're also proud of the integration between reflection, planning, and collaboration in a single mobile interface, all aligned with the user's personal mission.

What we learned

We learned how powerful it is to design from a place of empathy and purpose. We explored how to integrate AI for meaningful self-discovery, how to gamify reflection in small, digestible ways, and how to think cross-disciplinarily across wellness, productivity, and community building. It taught us the value of intentional UX that meets both emotional and functional needs.

What's next for Ikigai Purpose Driven App

Next, we plan to build a working prototype with real-time journaling, AI guidance, and mood-based task recommendations. We’re also exploring a community feed where users can share milestones, reflections, and challenges. Seasonal updates (like “Autumn Reset” or “Winter Vision”) will ensure the app stays fresh. Eventually, we hope to integrate wellness APIs, expand to Android and iOS, and grow a global user base that lives and builds with intention.
