Inspiration
Immokalee High School has a paper currency called "Wampums" for which they give students who are doing well academically and for good behavior. We determined that the currency our school uses does not reach the needs of the students. We decided to make an app for electronic currency where students could buy items that are cool and interesting. Using the app is also more student-friendly since most people have a phone.
What it does
The app creates a database where each student has their own bank account of electronic Wampums. Students can use the currency that the teacher gives them and buy items from the school store. For example they can buy sweatshirts, paper, pencils, and other school supplies.
How we built it
We built our app using MIT app inventor.
Challenges we ran into
There are limitations to the MIT app inventor software. For one, there are very few tutorials that were useful to us while developing the app so we spent a lot of time learning to utilize the software. We also found that developing a permanent database with MIT app inventor is very hard to do; in the end we used the 'TinyDB' function to store our information.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud with the interface of the app. The opening screen looks very nice and represents our school proudly! We are also proud that we were able to learn a new programming language with some help from our teacher.
What we learned
We learned how to make databases and how to develop apps.
What's next for IHS PBS
We are planning to integrate the app into Microsoft Access so that the database is permanent. We are also planning on making an additional app function to allow teachers to electronically give Wampums to students.
