Inspiration
The idea for IgniteGap came from a problem I kept seeing again and again: there are way too many opportunities for students, but finding the right ones is ridiculously difficult.
Hackathons, internships, scholarships, fellowships, competitions, research programs, conferences, grants... they are scattered across hundreds of websites, social media posts, university pages, and random announcement channels.
The opportunities are out there.
The problem is discovering them before the deadline passes.
I wanted to build something that could answer a much simpler question:
"What opportunities are actually worth my time?"
And that's how IgniteGap started.
What IgniteGap Does
IgniteGap is an AI-powered opportunity discovery platform built for students.
Instead of making students endlessly search for opportunities, IgniteGap brings them together in one place and helps users discover opportunities based on their interests, skills, goals, and profile.
The goal isn't just to show more opportunities.
It's to show better-matched opportunities.
IgniteGap uses AI-powered search, semantic understanding, and recommendation systems to understand what a student is looking for instead of relying only on exact keyword matches.
So instead of:
"Search: AI internship"
you can think more along the lines of:
"I'm a first-year CSE student interested in AI and robotics. Find me internships, hackathons, research programs, and competitions that I could realistically apply for."
That's the experience I wanted IgniteGap to create.
How We Built It
IgniteGap combines a modern web application with cloud infrastructure, structured opportunity data, and AI-powered discovery.
The platform uses React for the frontend and Supabase/PostgreSQL for authentication, data storage, and backend services.
For intelligent discovery, we use Google Cloud / Vertex AI along with semantic search and embeddings to understand the meaning behind a user's query rather than simply matching words.
Behind the scenes, opportunity data goes through processes for web scraping, data extraction, cleaning, processing, and ETL before becoming useful to users.
The system is designed around one simple principle:
Find → Understand → Match → Recommend.
The Challenges
Building IgniteGap has been less of a straight line and more of a collection of unexpected side quests. 😭
One of the biggest challenges was the data itself.
Opportunities don't come in a nice, standardized format. One website might provide a clean application deadline, another might hide it inside a paragraph, while another might have completely different fields and terminology.
That meant building pipelines capable of collecting, cleaning, normalizing, and organizing information from different sources.
Then came the harder question:
How do we decide whether an opportunity is actually relevant to a student?
Simple keyword matching wasn't enough.
A student searching for "AI research" might also be interested in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, NLP, or data science opportunities even when those exact words aren't present.
That pushed us toward semantic search, embeddings, and AI-based matching.
What I Learned
IgniteGap taught me that building a startup is very different from building a project for a college assignment.
A project can work.
A product has to make sense to people.
I've learned a lot about full-stack development, databases, cloud deployment, AI/ML, data pipelines, web scraping, APIs, authentication, and system design while building IgniteGap.
But probably the biggest lesson has been learning to constantly ask:
"Does this actually make someone's life easier?"
Because adding another feature is easy.
Building something people genuinely want to use is the hard part.
What's Next
IgniteGap is still evolving.
The long-term vision is to build a platform where students don't have to spend hours hunting for opportunities across the internet.
Instead, they should be able to open IgniteGap and find a constantly evolving list of opportunities that actually fit them.
More opportunities.
Better recommendations.
Less searching.
More doing.
That's IgniteGap. 🚀
