Inspiration
Phone repair guides are excellent on a laptop and awkward mid-repair. Both hands are on tools; looking away means losing place. SPECS / Spectacles let the guide sit in the same view as the device.
What it does
One clear help loop in Lens Studio preview (no SPECS glasses required for the demo):
- Look at the phone stand-in on the work surface.
- Pinch Found device — the current step card + photo callout anchors to the product (not a floating website UI).
- Pinch large Next / Prev hands-free while tools stay in hand.
- Always-visible attribution chip links the exact iFixit guide URL.

How we built it
Snap Lens Studio + Spectacles Interaction Kit / UI Kit. CLAD + Lens Studio MCP on the Specs Preview Base Template. iFixit public API 2.0 (no key for reads) — excerpted steps only. LEAF scenarios for Found-device and Next/Prev. Soft orientation coach (arrow / rotate cue + ghost); Next stays ungated.
Challenges we ran into
Keeping overlays on the product instead of a face-stuck website panel. Preview stand-in vs real object recognition (feel unproven until glasses). License discipline: excerpt + visible attribution, never a full manual dump. Hands-free as large pinch targets while hands stay busy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Anchored step + photo callout on a real-scale phone stand-in. Hands-free next/prev. Always-visible iFixit attribution. Design brief + orientation-coach plan under devpost/. Preview-first demo path for judges without SPECS hardware.
What we learned
Additive displays hate dark UI. Spatial repair help has to live where the hands already are. Soft orientation coaching (cue, don’t gate Next) matches messy real repairs better than hard locks.
What's next for iFixit AR Repair Overlay
Real image-target / world-mesh recognition on glass. More hero guides. Optional voice mirrored by the same Next/Prev buttons. Commercial packaging only after contacting iFixit.
