Inspiration

My viral https://chatgpt.com/g/g-uGueIrCsT-ielts-speaking-simulator and my own study needs inspired me to build a standalone app for realistic speaking practice, which I personally needed.

What it does

It's an AI-powered simulator that provides a full, realistic IELTS Speaking test. It features real-time voice chat with an AI examiner, followed by a detailed band score breakdown and high-scoring model answers.

How we built it

Built with Next.js and Tailwind CSS, the app uses the OpenAI/Gemini API for its conversational AI. A custom Cloudflare Worker provides unique test topics, and the entire project was developed with the help of Claude Code.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was managing the high cost and latency of real-time audio processing, which required significant optimization to make the experience seamless and affordable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proudest of the seamless, real-time voice conversation and the advanced prompt engineering that makes the AI a strict, but fair, IELTS examiner.

What we learned

I learned to effectively use AI development tools like Claude Code and mastered the art of prompt engineering to guide a language model through a highly structured task.

What's next for IELTS Speaking Simulator

  • Refine the band score evaluation for greater accuracy.
  • Generate feedback based on first principles to teach why an answer is effective.
