Inspiration

Each year, over 4 million IELTS tests are taken globally, yet there are remarkably few platforms that offer a unified, highly accurate mock testing experience. The motivation behind IELTS Achiever was to bridge this gap—providing candidates with a single destination where they can practice all four IELTS modules in a manner that closely mirrors the official exam environment. The vision was to create a solution that not only replicates the structure and rigor of the real test, but also harnesses AI to deliver dynamic, personalized, and insightful preparation.

What it does

IELTS Achiever allows students to immerse themselves in a comprehensive mock test experience. The platform covers Listening, Reading, and Writing sections, with a Speaking module featuring a real-time avatar coming soon. Every test is dynamically generated by AI, ensuring fresh, relevant, and challenging content for each user. Automated AI evaluation provides immediate, detailed feedback, empowering students to identify strengths and target areas for improvement. The approach is designed to make preparation both effective and engaging, while maintaining the authenticity of the actual IELTS exam.

How it was built

The backbone of the platform is powered by Convex, ensuring robust and scalable backend operations. The frontend was crafted end-to-end using bolt.new, enabling rapid prototyping and seamless UI development. While some backend components required custom coding for optimal performance, the majority of the user-facing experience was efficiently realized through bolt.new’s capabilities. For AI-driven question generation and evaluation, Groq was integrated as the primary provider, ensuring high-quality, contextually accurate content.

ElevenLabs played a crucial role in delivering authentic listening experiences. The platform leveraged ElevenLabs for AI-generated audio, utilizing advanced speaker selection and audio manipulation to create realistic, multi-speaker scenarios for the Listening section. This integration enabled the simulation of complex conversational audio, closely mirroring the diversity and nuance of real IELTS listening tasks.

Challenges encountered

One significant challenge was replicating the IELTS-style graphical feedback and analytics, which required intricate UI logic and attention to detail. Another hurdle involved multi-speaker audio for the Listening section. While ElevenLabs offers impressive multi-speaker capabilities in V3, API limitations meant creative solutions were needed to simulate authentic conversational scenarios. Despite these technical constraints, it was possible to deliver high-quality, multi-speaker audio that enriches the mock test experience.

Accomplishments to be proud of

Successfully launching a platform that delivers a near-authentic IELTS mock test experience in such a short timeframe stands out as a major accomplishment. The integration of real-time AI for both content generation and evaluation, combined with advanced audio features, sets IELTS Achiever apart from conventional practice tools. The ability to provide instant, actionable feedback and personalized analytics is particularly rewarding, as it directly supports learners in achieving their goals.

What was learned

Building IELTS Achiever in just four days was a transformative experience. It became clear that leveraging the right mix of existing technologies can dramatically accelerate development without sacrificing quality. This journey underscored the importance of adaptability, creative problem-solving, and the value of focusing on user-centric design. The process also highlighted how AI and modern development tools can democratize access to high-quality educational resources.

What's next for IELTS Achiever

Looking ahead, there are plans to introduce additional features aimed at supporting students’ broader career and language development. Gamification elements are being explored to boost engagement and motivation. Daily word learning modules and interactive challenges are on the roadmap, with the goal of making language mastery both fun and effective. In addition, a flexible pricing model will soon be implemented, alongside a generous free tier to ensure accessibility for all learners. The ambition is to continue evolving IELTS Achiever into a comprehensive platform that empowers learners to excel not just in tests, but in their academic and professional journeys.
