Inspiration

We love physics sandboxes where the feel is the game. For "Games with a Hook," we wanted combat where every kill is emergent — no canned death animation. You loose an arrow, it connects, and an active-ragdoll body folds and tumbles from the exact point of impact. That satisfying unpredictability is the hook, wrapped in a snackable Reddit roguelite.

What it does

Idle Death Archer is physics ragdoll archery. Hold to draw, drag to aim, release to fire. Headshots are instant kills. Survive endless waves (boss every few waves), and after each wave draft one of three upgrades: bows (Split / Gravity / Sniper), elemental arrows (Fire burns, Frost freezes and shatters, Lightning chains), and treasures. Coins are your score; death ends the run.

The signature hook is the Deathroll Fanatic — bank a Revive Charge and, at the brink of death, gamble it. A neon domain takes over the screen and a slot machine rolls your fate: jackpot for a full revive, invincibility, and a maxed bow and arrow — or the run is really over.

How we built it

Reddit Devvit (web) for the app + backend, Phaser for rendering, Planck.js for 2D physics, TypeScript and Vite. Characters are active ragdolls: muscle-driven joints that stand, aim, take hits, and die from real forces rather than scripted keyframes. Elemental effects, a roguelite draft system, and a liquid health/stamina HUD round out the loop.

Challenges we ran into

Making active ragdolls feel natural was the hard part — servo discretization caused jitter and blow-ups we had to root-cause and tame. We also worked around Reddit's portrait-locked webview (added a one-tap landscape mode) and the fact that the feed shows a static preview for interactive posts. And we shipped a physics-heavy game against a same-day deadline.

What we learned

Physics feel comes from forces, not from faking positions. Devvit's constraints (portrait webview, static feed previews) shape design more than we expected. And a tight, self-contained hook beats a big feature list.

What's next

More bows and elemental combos, deeper treasures, and leaderboards.
