Inspiration

When you think about love in today’s digital age, a lot of people say that it’s dead... but that’s because the definition of it has changed.

It’s now measured through emojis, likes on Instagram, or how frequently you post one another. But the truth is, love isn’t dead, we’ve just lost our ability to sense it.
And so, we asked a lot of people around us: How do you show love, and what does love mean to you? Everyone said something different, and this made us realize there is so much love all around us, but we don’t always see it.

Two people can care so deeply for one another, but if they show it in ways the other doesn’t understand, it goes unnoticed. The love is there; it’s just getting lost in translation.

We designed idklove. A product that guides you through the ways that the people around you show love.

What it does

idklove is glasses wearable and companion app for young adults aged 18–30 who feel deeply, but aren’t always sure what they’re feeling, or whether it’s being felt back. The glasses pick up on acts of care happening in real time. The ones that don’t always look like love but are. It helps you identify what you’re feeling toward someone, and what they might be feeling towards you.

But recognition is only half of it. The app also shows you how to close the gap, so that the love you have for someone actually reaches them in a way they can receive. And so the love they’re trying to give doesn't get mistranslated along the way.

How we built it

idklove was designed using Figma and Figma Make. We also used Nano Banana to generate visual aids for storytelling our product and it’s use cases.

Challenges we ran into

We all go to different schools across different time zones, so coordination alone was a challenge. But the harder part was scoping. idklove touches something deeply complex, so narrowing that down took most of our time and effort.
Moreover, figuring out how to make the hardware/wearables and the app feel like one cohesive product was new for us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made something that came from honest conversations about how we experience love and connection ourselves. Pulling that vulnerability into a design we're all proud of, across distance and different schedules, feels like its own kind of accomplishment.

What we learned

We learned a lot about each other. This project asked us to be open about how we give and receive love, which isn't a normal hackathon conversation. That honesty made us better collaborators and made the product more genuine.

What's next for idklove

If we had more time, we’d want to keep expanding the concept and deepening the logic behind how idklove detects and interprets acts of care, as there's a lot of nuances to love.
