NanoDungeon

Inspiration

When asked for solutions to bring students together, our group thought about what we enjoy, this being fantasy role playing games, similar to Dungeons & Dragons. What better way to create meaningful connections than collaborate against an evil wizard or vicious dragon.

What it does

Our solution is a chatbot that employs A.I to devise unique fantasy situations that active participants can then respond with their own creative solution. The bot then collates all the responses and returns the outcome of their escapades, combining all the individual responses into one team effort.

How we built it

We used a Discord bot programmed using Python and OpenAI packages.

Challenges we ran into

Being new to hackathons, almost everything was a challenge. For example, challenges included lack of GitHub expertise and struggle with unfamiliar code libraries such as Python's Discord library. However, through communication and strong planning abilities, we were able to circumvent these issues and ensure they did not damage our final product. Another issue we encountered was the large amount of additional commitments such as University assignments and part time jobs. This was similarly avoided by maximizing efficiency with task delegation and planning of scope, but led to some problems such as bad documentation, though product functionality was not compromised.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We utilized unfamiliar frameworks to finish our minimum viable product and complete most extra functionality. While we were a new team, we worked together very well and had no team chemistry issues.

What we learned

Our primary learning was collaborating on GitHub, which 2 of our 3 members were extremely unfamiliar with. Additionally, shared code bases were a more familiar but still very unfamiliar concept, with the importance of communicating function purposes to teammates and documentation being discovereed.

What's next for NanoDungeon

NanoDungeon's mission of bringing together Discord server members would benefit from the implementation of scheduled posting so that group rituals are made.
