Problem

idetox was inspired by our own experiences using social media throughout the pandemic. With more time on our hands, social media use among college students is higher than ever and studies have found that this increased social media usage is contributing to higher levels of anxiety and negatively impacting our mental health.

For our project, we decided to have a special focus on Instagram. From a user research survey that our team conducted, we found that:

  • Over 60% of our respondents used Instagram for at least an hour each day
  • 80% of our respondents used Instagram for entertainment and 60% used Instagram for socializing
  • Common emotions felt after using Instagram were bored, stressed, anxious, unproductive
  • Users found inspiration and joy through memes, cooking videos, and other recreational content but also felt distressed and triggered by other content

Solution

idetox is our proposed solution that helps users be more mindful about the impact that their feeds have on their mental health. It's hard to disconnect from social media but idetox allows users to have more control over what content they consume.

idetox connects to your Instagram account and puts your Instagram feed into idetox's "mindful scrolling" feed. To "scroll", users must assign an emotion to each post they see before moving on to the next post. These emotions are completely private and not shared anywhere else. Over time, idetox will compile statistics about the user's reactions and has a feature that allows users to pinpoint specific accounts to consider muting or unfollowing, based on their emotional reactions to their posts.

This solution gives users insights into how they're feeling and empowers them to take control of their feeds by muting or unfollowing content that negatively impacts their mental health.
