Elevator pitch

Paste your startup idea. Get a verdict in 30 seconds. IdeaValidator scores any idea on clarity, market, monetization, and feasibility — then hands you a business model, a landing-page headline, first steps, and top risks.

Inspiration

Great startup ideas die every day, not because they are bad, but because turning an idea into a real product is hard. Aspiring founders run into technical barriers, lack of resources, and no clear path from "I have an idea" to "I built something real." The tools and mentorship needed to build a startup are often only available to people who already have access, connections, or money. IdeaValidator is the first 30 seconds of that path: before you write code, find out if the idea deserves it.

What it does

Paste a startup idea, or tap a sample (AI lecture flashcards, pet food subscription box, campus marketplace). The rule-based engine scores four dimensions 0–100, each with a plain-English explanation: Clarity (who, what, for whom?), Market (real audience + real pain?), Monetization (is there a way to get paid?), Feasibility (can a small team build it?). Then it delivers: an overall verdict (Strong / Promising / Needs work), the inferred target-user persona, 3 monetization paths with a business-model suggestion, a landing-page headline, the first 3 concrete steps, and the top 3 risks. An optional Gemini second opinion is available via a user-supplied key, with silent fallback to the rule engine.

Product

IdeaValidator is a single-page startup validation tool for aspiring founders — especially students with an idea and no mentor. The product is the verdict plus the action plan: not just "your idea scores 62", but "here is your weakest dimension, here is how you make money, here is your headline, here are your next three steps." That turns a vague idea into a Monday-morning plan.

Tech architecture

Single-file HTML + CSS + vanilla JavaScript. Zero install, no backend, no build step, hosted on GitHub Pages. The core is a deterministic rule engine: keyword signals for audiences, pains, revenue models, and hard industries, combined into four seeded 0–100 scores with explanations. All user input is escaped before display, so pasted HTML renders as harmless text. The optional Gemini second opinion (Gemini 2.0 Flash) reads a user-supplied key from browser localStorage only; any failure falls back to the rule engine with an honest note.

Target consumers

Aspiring student founders (ages 13–22) with a startup idea and no access to mentors, accelerators, or funding — the exact audience the Next Founders Hackathon serves. Secondary: hackathon participants validating ideas before a build weekend, and first-time founders who need a reality check before spending months building.

Business model

IdeaValidator itself follows the model it recommends: freemium. Free core validation for everyone (the tool you are using now), plus a paid Pro tier for founders who want more: saved idea history, comparison of idea versions, PDF reports, and AI deep-dives (competitor scan, pricing analysis, pitch-deck outline). Revenue streams: Pro subscriptions ($5/month student pricing), team/educator licenses for hackathons and entrepreneurship classes, and affiliate referrals to incorporation and landing-page tools. Path to sustainability: near-zero marginal cost (static hosting + optional AI calls paid per use), distribution through hackathons and student founder communities where the tool is already useful on first use.

How we built it

Single-file HTML + CSS + vanilla JavaScript in one focused session. The rule engine was designed around real failure modes of student startup ideas: vague ideas ("an app for everyone"), no revenue model, and hardware/regulated moonshots pitched as weekend projects. Every score had to be explainable — no black boxes.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was honesty: a validator that calls everything "Strong" is useless, and one that calls everything "Needs work" is cruel. We tuned the thresholds so a specific, monetized, buildable idea scores Strong, while a vague idea scores Needs work with a clear reason — and every explanation tells the founder exactly what to fix.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A tool that gives a genuinely useful answer in 30 seconds with zero setup: a verdict, a business model, a headline, next steps, and risks. It never pretends to be investment advice — the disclaimer says so on every screen.

What we learned

Most startup ideas do not fail on technology. They fail on clarity (nobody knows who it is for), market (no pained user), or monetization (no way to get paid). A validator that checks those three things first saves months of building the wrong thing.

What's next for IdeaValidator

Saved idea history and version comparison, PDF reports, AI deep-dives (competitor scan, pricing analysis), and a classroom mode for entrepreneurship teachers.
