ICUs are pivotal to thwart the impact of COVID-19 in our society. Being a Respiratory Syndrome a lot of patient are now flooding ICUs across the world, leading to hospitals having to expand their ICUs quickly and having to assign more staff not familiar to the ICU service. This means that for the Nurse in Charge the task of allocating staff to patients is a bigger problem than before: they have to allocate more people with a more diverse set of skills, to more patients with different needs. At the same time, it is important to ensure that all teams within the ICU have adequate levels of experience and workload for the patients they are assigned to.
Knowing people that work in ICUs in the UK we know the struggle these front-line workers are dealing with on a daily basis. One of the struggles faced is that with more people to manage it is now harder to create a good allocation plan. This can lead to overworked staff; underexperienced staff working without an experienced co-worker close by; Nurses in Charge having to come sooner for work to better prepare, losing precious rest and family time; and patients not getting the best care possible as the staff allocation does not meet their individual needs.
We propose a solution called ICU Planner to help the Nurse in Charge plan a better shift. ICU Planner will provide the Nurse in Charge with all the necessary information, and with the help of AI will also automatically suggest shift allocations which can then be tailored to the specific needs of that staff.
