Inspiration
88% of cardiac arrests occur out of hospital with only a third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander. When CPR is performed, it is often ineffective as people rarely apply enough force.
Performing effective CPR can double the victims chance of survival and we hope that we can make people feel more comfortable and confident in performing CPR.
What it does
ICPR is a mobile and ready to use tool to practice giving effective CPR. It focuses on two crucial elements of CPR; these are the frequency of compressions and the amount of force required. Our app will allow users to improve their CPR technique by giving real-time feedback on how well they are doing.
How we built it
We have used a Raspberry Pi connected to load sensors to determine the force input of the user performing chest compressions, and this sensor data is fed into Firebase. We also used 3D printed anatomical parts to provide more realism and allow the user to identify the correct position on the chest.
Our web front-end has been built using React, and enables the user to have a visual representation of how effective their chest compressions, giving feedback on both the speed and force of their compressions.
Challenges we ran into and what we learned
As computer science students we were not used to producing hardware. Thanks to the help of ICRS we learned how to solder, 3D print, laser cut and linking circuits

What's next for ICPR
We want to provide free access to CPR training by allowing others to build their own Raspberry Pi powered CPR trainer by providing instructions and open-source code.
