Inspiration
It was hard to find people local to me who rode PEVs to organize group rides. I would see three or four of them separately, but I was never able to stop and talk to them to organize something. The closest existing group on Meetup was nearly an hour away, so I wanted an easier way to find people with similar interests locally.
What it does
It allows anyone to input their interests, and match them up with people nearby with similar interests, allowing people to find others with shared interests and contact each other.
How we built it
The app was built in React Native, with a SQLite backend
Challenges we ran into
This was the first time I had built a mobile app, and the first time using React Native and really JavaScript in general for something other than basic web pages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app mostly works, which is surprising since my previous experience attempting to write an Android app in Java was terrible.
What we learned
It has given me much greater familiarity with how JavaScript frameworks work, as well as exposure to NPM and Expo development tools.
What's next for Icebreaker
Migration to a more resilient database, flesh out the features and CSS. The app is quite skeletal since most of the time was spent on learning how the framework worked.
