Inspiration 💡
Winter can be a lonely period. Inspired by Disney’s Olaf from Frozen, we wanted to create a buddy for players this holiday season. Join us on an adventure to make friends with Toasty the snowman! “Some people are worth melting for” 😊!
A fun spin on the classic character Frosty the snowman with a happy ending :D
Created a scenario that would never occur in the sunny island, SIngapore that we live in, SNOW.
What it does 🔍
Bringing back old arcade games to the comfort of players' homes, "Ice to meet you" takes on a nostalgic turn towards a winter-christmas theme with 3 unique components.
First, we help to collect snow to build Toasty the snowman.
Then, we help a chef to bake some gingerbread cookies in exchange for Toasty's carrot nose. (The gingerbread recipe is based on the real thing!)
Finally we enter a snowball fight with a quick and mischievous elf to get a hat for Toasty
At the end of the day, we sit back and enjoy some nice crunchy toast with Toasty, and look back on the great day we had.
How we built it 🔧
Tech stack: Pixi.js, ValinaJS, JQuery, CSS, HTML, ZIM BITS, bootstrap, hosting done on vercel, domain name created using GoDaddy.com
We first decided on a story line, coming up with the different elements of the story and the goals of each section of the story.
Then we split and worked on the different components.
Finally was the challenge of combining all the components into a cohesive website and hosting it, which we fortunately managed to do in time!
Challenges we ran into 🏃♂️
- Time management as well as learning.
- Trying different hosting sites and integrating a custom domain name to it.
- We had issues adding the domain name to heroku due to credit card problems
- We were not sure how we should start the story at first, and took a while to figure out the general outline
- We looked into a few different javascript libraries to see which could help us create the fun and interactive elements of the story
- The gingerbread making segment of the story was inspired by cooking mama, and it was challenging to figure out not only how to adapt the touchscreen based games for pc, but how to implement it with javascript as well.
- While we managed to use heroku to host our website, the loading of materials was slower than expected. A few changes had to be made to make it less laggy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏅
- Managed to complete 3 different components in a short time!
- The game components turned out better than expected and we had a lot of fun figuring out how to create each game mechanic.
What we learned 🧠
- Learned how to use PIXI js and some of the more advanced features it offers such as masking, filtering and other interactions
- Learning how to host a simple static website to vercel
What's next for Ice to meet you ⏭️
- Greater story & character development and more adventures with Toasty the snowman!
- Addition of other fun winter time characters
- Use of more interesting interactive controls for the minigames
